I think it's a good idea to mark people (if we don't want to play with them) with some other way other than red/green thumbs. The 20% ratio sounds good... but I would suggest something like expiring the red thumbs alone (not green) after a period of 60 days or so... like the late penalties. this will help the person as he/she is given a chance to improve otherwise, the red is a permanent scar that each one has to have.

Why should red thumbs expire, but green ones stay? That's not fair at all. In the end everyone would have hundreds of greens and no reds, even if they're agressive. Therefore, expiration of thumbs is not a good idea. The ratio system that is offered here would make a better job of preventing foul judgement. And 10% ratio would be enough, I think, based on my own experience of giving thumbs.

Cheers.

Hi,

@Uxhmer & Bun:
Indeed, red/green thumb can't expire because it reflects the opinion of a player about another player, and is not linked to a particular game (or any point of time).

@pikiou:
My experience of BGA moderator tells me that there is a need of "red thumb" besides the "report" system. There's a lot of situation where a player makes you uncomfortable without breaking the Terms of Use of BGA (example: an annoying player that writes "Zzzzzz" every 10 seconds in the chat).

I agree with having the thumbs but also perhaps a star system. Perhaps up to 3-5 stars for how much I like to play with said player based on skill, playing style, etc.. Down thumbs should be reserved for bad behavior that doesn't violate the terms of agreement and for quitting games.

+1 I was gonna ask for this.

As to a x-% red thumb ratio, yeah, why not.

Clearly all people do not use red thumbs the same way: there should be, as mentioned in another thread, two ways to evaluate players:

- I do not recommend to play with this player (this should be limited to 10% I think)

- And I do not personally like playing with this player but I do not want to red flag him: he is just slightly too slow for example (which I would not use much, but should not be limited as it will not appear on the other player's profile) ... However, I think I would use quite a lot if I could have a flag "I personally like playing with this player"

Is there a chance that only experienced players on BGA only give red thumbs when a player is offensive or is leaving the game? This 'personal' note is nice to use when you don't like to play with the player, but he doesn't deserve the red thumb. However, more inexperienced players will just use the red thumb system I think. And for them, a limit in maximum given red thumbs is good.

So, in conclusion, I would like to see a max rate, and a possibility to just make a note for youself about a player.

pikiou wrote:The simplest solution is a 10% ratio to force red thumbs to be like reports of bad behavior, which it already is for most games and players. Problem is you get the same sanction for taking time to think, and outrageous insults.
The better solution would be to replace red and green thumbs by private and unlimited "likes" and "dislikes", then to add a report button (with the type of bad behavior specified from a list, so you could automatically check if the report was legit).

This is a perfect suggestion. It takes care of personal logging of favored players and also handles cases of poor behaviour. Right now we have people spitefully giving red thumbs to anyone who beats them. We have people - including one in this thread alone - that admits to red-thumbing players he simply doesn't feel are skilled enough players (so basically red-thumb-bombing all the newbies to make them feel so wonderfully welcome here). You can't tell what they are for, making it a useless metric for judging other players.

Lets face it, the system is broken. Lets fix it.

This has been my sentiment since joining the site as well. Granted I only play a limited number of games, so maybe this is a greater issue with larger games that have more players per game, so my perspective is somewhat limited. That said, I use the thumbs system in the way ludoh and pejsek seem to in that I see there is a report function for flagrantly bad players so I use the thumbs system to remind me of my personal preferences regarding people I have played. Some clarity on this from BGA might be a touch welcome though as some players get really offended when I give them a red thumb just because I don't like playing them. So here's how I see it:

1) The Report function is for the worst offenders and is satisfactory the way it is.

2) The Time Out and Drop Out marks are sufficient to target people that are poor players that drop out of games but I for one would not allow these marks to disappear over time (I have limited sympathy for people with poor connections unless they stipulate their game speed as "Slow").

3) The Thumb system should be recognized as an entirely personal system that does not require justification to other players and should not be visible by other players. Furthermore, you should be able to maybe add a Two Thumbs situation. I do this personally and here's how: I am willing to play someone I have given a red Thumb, however, if I find the game to warrant another red Thumb, then they get added to 'The List', which is a personal collection of names I simply will not play with anymore (I evict them from my rooms). If I could have this incorporated into BGA so I did not have to worry about the possibility of losing my List that would be appreciated.

4) If there is interest in it create a Star system that allows you to inform other players what you think of this particular player based on skill and behavior, NOT on personal metrics. There are those players out there that just destroy me every time so I give them a thumbs down because I would prefer not to repeatedly lose to them, BUT I would definitely give them 5 Stars because I recognize their superior skill and sportsmanlike behavior.

I just feel right now players are using the Thumbs system as either a personal mark or a community recommendation and because of this friction can develop between members of the two camps.

As for the ratio thing discussed specifically in this thread, I don't see myself as being "bad" if I give out a great deal of red Thumbs, I just recognize there are things I did not care for some aspect of these player's conduct. I don't hate them as people or players, I would simply prefer to play other people I have awarded green Thumbs to. So I'm opposed to the notion of adding arbitrary ratio limits on the Thumb system.

Hi,

The "personal sticky note" feature just landed on BGA :)

I'm working now on the thumb up/down ratio.

Cheers,
