So it's absolutely surreal reading this thread.

Maybe this is an autistic person thing, but it says in the guidelines of the game:

"Many players consider deliberate blocking (when you take a segment that interferes with your opponent without actually helping you) to be unsporting."

So to me of course if I went into a social space with other people and was told something might be considered unsporting, I simply wouldn't do it, ever. I don't do it because winning isn't more important to me than people's enjoyment of the game or abiding by a community convention. And if I was playing football, and was told certain tactics could be seen as unsporting, I wouldn't be doing them either. If you genuinely don't believe there can be be long discussions in a sport about what is and isn't sporting/in the spirit of the game, I suggest you look at 100 years of cricket history to disabuse you of this notion.

But there's more to it than this, because I play this game a lot, and it's a fact that the majority of players I play against don't block just to sabotage - sure, we put track where we need it ahead of the other person sometimes but the majority of us, from my experience, don't lay track where we can't use it, even if our route is wide open to it, and we certainly wouldn't box someone in to stop them connecting their routes. *

So. There's this guidance written down *in the rules* that people know about, and there's clearly a huge number, if not a majority, who aren't blocking, so this means that folks who block are giving themselves an unfair advantage over those of us who don't.

In reality, if you want to block and feel okay about it, you need to petition BGA to remove that guidance or change it to "there are two completely incompatible attitudes towards playing this game and they are as follows...". As long as it's there as it is, you're not just playing to win, you're taking advantage of other people's sence of decency and following rules and guidance unless you know both of you are playing to the "blocking is acceptable" strategy. It's basically a good example of the prisoner's dilemma.

While the guidance is there as it is, I believe the ethical position would be for the blockers to declare themselves and seek out fellow blockers to play with, not for the non-blockers to do so. If we were just making up a guidline out of thin air that would be different - but we're not.

It's like how when you have a playground fight you don't kick your opponent in the nuts. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should or that it's playing fair to do so. Society has all sorts of unwritten rules but in this case it's *written* and people keep conveniently ignoring that bit.

I don't even know what guidelines you refer to, but the fact that some people think something doesn't mean anything. Some people think the earth is flat, so what? Also stating that many people consider blocking unsporting doesn't make it a rule at all. But I agree that sentence must be removed from the guidelines because it makes zero sense, nothing like it is mentioned on the official rules and people should l2p instead of whining.

Blocking is not mentioned on the rules, so playing without blocks is an house rule. As every house rule you are free to try and agree with opponents to stick to it, you can even stick to it unilaterally, but you can not expect everyone to agree with your idea on how the game should be played.

It's in the strategy tips (https://en.doc.boardgamearena.com/Tips_tickettoride). No need to petition anyone to change it, anyone can do it. Just as anyone could have added it, or anyone can write that you are allowed to keep the locomotive cards after using them...

Like others have said, literally anyone can edit the Tips for a game. Just because one person says that does not make it a hard and fast rule. This was not someone with special authority. We can see right in the history who added this: https://en.doc.boardgamearena.com/index ... ldid=14849 - just a regular player named PigeonHunter.

But realistically that's not even relevant here. The key words are "many players consider" and "unsporting". There is nothing in the rules that say you cannot block. Some people just "don't like it" because they think it's not fun. It's purely an opinion and not one held by everyone. For friendly games feel free to try to find matches where you declare blocking to not be allowed. But to say the onus is on people that block to declare they will be blocking is ridiculous when it is fully allowed in the rules.

This is written in the rules : A player may claim any open route on the board. He is never required to connect to any
of his previously played routes.

End of story.

Players that block as a course of completing their routes or even because it happens to be convenient are different that the players - usually very high ELO - that literally save up cards, complete as few routes as possible, usually only two, and spend the rest of their game blocking the other person. That kind of playing doesn't even make sense and I really dislike playing with those people. Strategy is one thing - being a jerk just to be a jerk and winning by default without actually trying to complete routes is just playground bullying.

The goal of the game is to win more points than your opponent, it is not to build pretty routes, or serve the public good, or even having fun.

Many others have already spoken about the 'authority' behind these guidelines so I'll skip that. However, I wanted to add that I would generally agree with you in games played purely in a social environment. Friendly games all the way there. However, games played at BGA are always ranked, either via Arena mode or via a players ELO rating in a standard game. The only exception are friendly games. So, if you were to set up a friendly game then I would fully support the 'no blocking' approach. If you are playing any other style of game here then it is ranked and people will ( and should) play to win.

If they win it makes sense, everything else is just your opinion, based on a very low understanding of the game and not supported by any facts.

And, many consider it a part of the game, well within the rules, that is perfectly sporting. The designer of the game has reportedly opined that blocking is part of the game. That it is a matter for debate boggles the mind.
