Ratings and Tournaments

Post by gtmac »

Please make tournament games unrated. I received 1st place in a tournament the other day, not because I won the final game or because my opponent wasn't online. My opponent in the final was online and informed me that he wasn't going to play the last game because he didn't want to jeopardize his rating by playing a lower rated opponent.

Regardless of my feelings about rating protectionism, I don't feel that ratings should be a concern in tournaments. A higher rating is not my goal in participating in a tournament and should not be the reward.

Do they not lose for not showing up or it doesn't count? I guess it should be off. You get a medal for winning. Of course with it off the competition will probably go up as higher rated players will more willingly play the lower rated players.

I think you lose points if you don't show up at the tournament beginning, but not on a match after

For me it doesn't matter whether I lose points or gain them. I don't care to win a tournament because my online opponent decides he doesn't want to play me fore reasons outside the tournament. What's the point?

So that should be changed.

If he thinks he is a good player, he shouldn't be scared and back down from a lowly rated player. He should be forced to play you, otherwise if he didnt show up, his rating will drop by the same number of points if he played you and lost. It's an honor system and you must respect every opponent by graciously accepting their challenge whether they have a high or low rating. Avoiding a match is just plain cowardice.
