X Tokens

Post by Panthergirl »

I am mostly playing solo games (-7 is the best I've been able to do) but I have also played some friendlieS (I did mange to get to 115 once!) I notice that when others use the X Tokens it seems like a LOT happens. For me I only see the level of the action go up by the number of Tokens.

Am I missing something? Can someone explain the best way to use them?

The biggest challenge for me seems to be running out of money, and having the sponsor card in position 5 when I have no sponsor cards. Thanks!!

In the mid game X tokens are useful for tactical moves, such as drawing cards before your opponent, or triggering a break before they have played animals/sponsors.

In the late game they are best used for playing your important actions more often (usually Animals and Association).
Particularly if you have upgraded your Association action it can be a good place to dump them. Playing Association at strength 7 or 8 will allow you to support a Conservation Project as well as get a Partner Zoo or 2 Reputation in the same turn (as long as you have enough workers).

This last point is the part I was missing! I didn't understand that if you play at 7 or 8, you'd get to do more than one action. Thanks!!

Note that going over 5 doesn't scale with all actions. With Cards and Animals, there is no point in spending Xs to go over 5. With the other ones however it can be useful, but only if you've upgraded the card (I guess except for Sponsors for money, Xs can be extra money/more pause progression even without upgrading) because that's what allows you to use multiple association workers/play multiple sponsors/build multiple enclosures.

So, I have an additional question concerning X-tokens. In the online BGA version, if you choose the alternative X-token action, you can choose the card in slot 1 and receive a token. Technically, youd dd choose a card, but didn't necessarily "move" it into the 1 slot. In the board game rules, it states: "You must still select and move a card to slot 1, shifting all other cards to the right ". Do these actions, one online and the other with the physical board game seem contradictory to each other? Appreciate any perspective provided. Thank you in advance.

The physical game works the same. It was just a clarification from the designer that you are SUPPOSED to be able to choose a slot 1 card, and "move" into slot 1 and nothing changes.

Fun fact, I myself asked this question back in 2021 when the physical game came out. :D https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/274593 ... e/38697942
