Why does my ranking * so bad?

Post by Ricky2017 »

I used to have some averagely okay rankings on many games. Like 170 or 200 sumthing. but since 3 months ago everything has gone down. Almost all games are level 100. I have literally played thousands of games throughout the last 3 months and yet no change. This site used to be somthing I enjoy greatly. But now it is nothing but a constant battle with depression. Is it just me???

ELO and ranking are not much related.

The ELO is there to help you find players you want to play with, because you are equally experienced.
It is not a ladder (play Arena if you want a ladder).

Also, you can't compare ELO between games.
A game with a high randomness will never be very high, because the more you play, the more you risk being unlucky, and the faster you drop.

Having said that, do you think that the players you meet don't match your own ELO? For which games?

Easier said that done, perhaps, but I'd suggest not worrying too much about your ranking or Elo ratings on BGA. If it genuinely makes you depressed, then you need to take stock of everything in your life.

Thanks for the reply. I truly appreciate it. In general I am usually interacting with players within 100 - 150 points beyond my level. I find it hard to understand how some people playing the same "lucky" games can have ELO that far exceed anything I've ever experienced. I also think it unreasonable to simply ignore the ElO ranking as literally for hundreds of people I have interacted with on this site seem to only care about that.

Note: obviously I have no idea how to quote. Some of the quote is yours, most are my words. Thanks for understanding.

Some of the games you play, like Castles of Burgundy and Azul, rely far more on skill than luck, so your ELO would appear to be a fairly accurate reflection of your current ability.

When you first start playing any game on here, your ELO climbs quickly whenever you win, because a K muliplier is used, which is bigger for those who have played fewer games. (This also means that your ELO will drop by a lot when you lose.)

Maybe you had a couple of somewhat lucky victories early on that boosted your ELO beyond its 'correct' resting level?

You also say that you often play with people of 150+ ELO higher than yuors. In many BGA games, there is a pretty big difference in skill between someone of just over 100 ELO and someone in the high 200s, so maybe you should limit your play to opponents who are apprentices/regular players for a while. Your ELO will increaase by less when you win, but you should win a bit more often, so it would be less depressing.

Or if it's really making you miserable, just play in training/friendly mode, where your ELO won't change at all.

Elo has nothing to do with being experienced. Smart players don't need that much experience to stand on a higher level than those bad players who played thousands of times and still have a poor understanding of the strategy.

Some great solutions here. Don't play games that invovle luck (Still not clear how level 368 players manage to achieve that?). Play low level players (Though many many times I have seen "level 0" players take down bigger players... and myself, of course). Accept the fact that I'm stupid and have not aquired a grasp of the necessary strategy despite thousands of gameplays. Lastly, and perhaps most advisable, Delete the account if it truly makes you depressed. Well noted. I shall follow the later as this site seems to be as unhealthy as say twitter, ticktok facebook, etc. etc.
Thanks
