Why is matchmaking so bad?

Post by Samtacular »

This matchmaking system frequently puts me (1600+ arena elo) against plat and diamond players. Ofc losing is frustrating but this makes the effort seem worthless when you grind 5 games for 30 point and lose 35 in the next. Also, why is the elo cap not working in arena? My elo often reaches 300+ but arena puts me with 100+ elo players, regardless of the arena rank.

I am sadly forced to agree with this assessment. If you play a lot of Arena and have a reasonable ELO, it becomes nearly impossible to climb higher in the charts because the upside/downside is so imbalanced. I cannot fathom the win percentage that would be required, which is completely inconsistent with a game in which highly ranked players might win 60% of their matches. Please either fix the match making or, better, the ranking system.

Are you Elite? Have you set your Arena options to play only with your level? If not, that's the reason. If you have, then you can report a bug.

Because Arena doesn't care about ELO (but ELO cares about Arena). The "level" in Arena settings refers only to Arena leagues, and not to ELO. If you want to restrict you opponent's ELO, don't play Arena.

Let me answer this one too:

I am Elite , ELO 360, 60% win rate, Arena 10th.
I did set Arena options but it doesn't work in this mode.
If we could set preferences as shown I would understand and support the ranking system. For example if a good player wants to climb in the ranking by playing only weaker ones, it's normal he doesn't get big rewards for it but big losses when he fails, just like the pay according to the odds of a bet.
Since preferences doesn't work I also find the ranking system very tough.

Another point I don't get is why Arena allows turn based games?
If someone keeps many games open that are almost over with a guaranteed win for him, he can come back from any position to first in minutes. It could be and is for some a strategy but it corrupts Arena definition and is disloyal to an open fight in the coliseum because they are invisible; unless you look into thousands of players to identify them. And if you do, to estimate the score of that player at the end of Arena and when he finishes all of them, you can look into all ongoing games and analyze the win probability according to each opponent points and ELO. Impossible of course so why can the turn based invisible player have access to all this data about all of us???

It's an important change to be done, between other important ones. (normal timer: players have a set time for the total length of the game which doesn't increase timer remaining time after each move but would only 10, 12, 15.. seconds after each roll results.)

ELO doesn't matter in Arena. % of wins doesn't matter in Arena. The only thing that matters is your AES (Arena score, which you can see once you reach Elite), and that of your opponent(s).
When I say Arena options I mean the opponent level (only in my level, +/-1 level, etc.). As far as i know that should work (but here "level" refers to Arena league), and if it doesn't you could report a bug.

Yes as you said earlier, thanks. I was giving context to my reply and previous posts in this forum.
No it doesn't work, I play any category despite settings, both for level, reputation.
What do you think about turn based in arena?

I hate turn-based in general, and I hardly play Arena for any game.

It seems to me having a lot of turn-based games in progress can only give some flexibility. You still have to play them in time, and as far as I know you are somewhat restricted in the order you play them (you have to play the match that has been waiting for you the longest before playing others). In any case, it would become a meta-game about how to manage your matches in order to get a better ranking in "some website" that offers nothing but showing your username at the top of a list. If people want to engage in that, they're welcome.

True thanks for the information
