Longer Tournament Games

Post by CHatDad »

I run small turn-based tournaments with friends and family, and for most games, the 30 day time limit for each game works fine. But some games require a lot of turns or a lot of player interaction on every turn, so a player may need to take 60-80 turns in a game (Earth is the latest example of this). I have some people in different parts of the world, or people who only have time at certain parts of the day, and so they may only be able to fit in 1 or 2 turns a day.

This has resulted in many games that were still active, but just slower, to timeout, which is always disappointing, especially when they are really close to finishing.

Is there any way to lengthen the time of individual games? Just adding an option for 60 days would probably solve our issue.

I'm not sure they've added any new tournament setting features for 3 years, I don't think it's an area of the site that gets much development.

I believe 30 days is the maximum length of any game in a tournament. I agree with you, the tournament creator ought to have the option to set the game length at something more than this. Here are a few suggestions that may be relevant:

Indeed. I'm in a Caverna tournament in which we were on the last turn but the game was abandoned and the win given to the player who had most time left. The player who was way ahead on points was given 4th place even though they still had time on their clock. Playing for 30 days to get this result was very silly. See table #374403334.

I may undertand this better now but how do holiday jokers affect this?

I don't think holiday jokers make a difference in the overall tournament time game, they just let you avoid going negative and getting kicked from a game early.

Jokers only apply to regular play, not tournament games.

Automobiles is another game that desperately needs this. Each player may take in the neighborhood of 75 - 150 turns, depending on how the tournament is configured. That's each player, and there can be 5 players to a tournament. It's not unusual for Automobiles matches to time out.

I'd enter this as a suggestion in the Bugs forum, but sadly there seems to be little point. Other suggestions regarding tournaments have languished over 2 years now without even being acknowledged.
