How can I find a certain player's games in progress?

On their profile, it tells you how many turn-based games they are playing, which is a link to a list of those games. It normally indicates if they're also playing a real-time game.

It works like this....unless they've given you a red thumb. In fact, not being able to see this is the one way to tell if someone has given you a red thumb.

Do you mean in-game chat? You should not be paired in any games, unless it's a tournament. Red thumbs don't block tournaments. But if you happen to be in the same tournament game they can see your chat messages.

As for direct messages, I'm not sure. I've never tried it.
