Arena games: chat

Post by Ursula1972 »

I haven't played a lot of arena games the past 12 months. Before that a lot (!) more. I opened some turn based games the last week and I noticed that when I lost the winner did not say thank you or gg or something in chat. They did the last move, so when I woke up and I saw that I lost I thanked them in chat.

Is is just coincedence or did we change at BGA from polite to play play play win win win and say nothing?

It's possible that the person you played just doesn't necessarily do those things. There's not one right way to be. Personally, I've played the same game 3-4 times in a row with the same person, and I start to feel like saying "gl hf" at the start and "gg ty" at the end, seemingly by rote, with no variance comes across as a bit disingenuous to me. But that's just the way I feel. I say "gg" when I feel it was a particularly well played or hard fought game, or if something else moves me too, I don't always. And I usually don't in the situation you described, as when that happens to me, it's just a random notification that pops up, hours after I've moved on from the game, and doesn't mean much, and I feel silly doing it to others. To each their own.

I've only joined in the last 9 months myself, so I can't comment if things have changed, but knowing how society in general tends to run (some people like small talk, some hate it), it may just be that before you happened to get more people who did say stuff than not.

Thank you for your reaction. It just seems polite to me if someone just say thank you for the game (it is one of the sentences in chat) or GG if you win but that is problably not normal anymore. It happened 4 times now in a row with different people in different games ;)

After seeing so many people cry about feeling like they are having their noses rubbed in a loss if the winner says "gg" or "thanks for the game" (because such phrases could only ever be an assertion of dominance instead of courtesy), I only give a game-ending comment when I win if someone else initiates courteous post-game discussions (not something like "you just got lucky"). I also give those people a green thumb for having a good attitude even in defeat.
