Roboto Font Not Rendering in Chrome

Has anyone had trouble with the correct font not showing for BGA in Chrome? For the last few days when I go to boardgamearena.com, it's defaulting to Times New Roman instead of the Roboto font that it usually shows. It works fine in other browsers. I've tried CTRL+F5, reinstalling the font, and reinstalling the browser and that didn't help. I don't see any options to download a specific font in Chrome and googling hasn't provided any other solutions.


It's particularly annoying in games where the game has helpful bolding/italics because those don't work if it can't find the font.

Maybe your browser or some plugins do not allow the download of this font for privacy/security reasons ?

Have you tried with the private navigation mode of your browser, or with these plugins turned off?

Thanks for the suggestions! Those are good ideas I hadn't tried because it must be a browser issue since it works on other browsers. It had been working fine on my browser for years too. It's so weird.

I tried turning off all plugins and restarting the browser but that didn't work. I tried cognito mode and the problem still remains. Any other ideas anyone has would be appreciated.

Since the 5th July, we have been hosting Roboto on our servers, instead of linking to an external site as before. This is bound to be the cause of your issues, but I can't see why.

Are you able to download the font from here? Maybe this url is being blocked for some reason.

Ahh yeah it must be something with that because that's right when it started happening. I am able to download that font using Chrome from that location without any issues.

There are no errors in the console and, although I don't see that specific font in the Network tab, I don't see any very concerning files that aren't returning 200:


If I inspect the element, I can navigate to the common.css document it references too.

There must be some reason my browser is not allowing that font file to be downloaded but I went through all my browser settings and I don't see any suspects. I don't have anything set to any higher security than what it is by default. Hmm....

I think I've found the bug, I think we will load a local font with name "" (empty string) if it's installed, before loading Roboto.
I've committed the fix, but won't be available until the next deploy.

Excellent! I'll reply here if I notice it's working again. I'm surprised others haven't reported this issue. Maybe they like Times New Roman.

I think you mean Courier rather than Times New Roman, although I'm not sure that's what you see.
