Is creating an original game supported?

Post by muppet9010 »

Hi,

I'm looking at creating an original simultaneous execution turn based war game and wondered if BGA approves of these?
As opposed to a digitalisation of an existing board game. I can't see anything in the wiki that says it's not, but all references to developers undertaking real projects refer to adapting an existing physical board game.

I came to think of BGA as I play memoir 44 here and so value the BGA engine and ecosystem. Especially its asynchronous friendly nature to enable much easier to organise PvP turn based games.
The game concept is a hybrid in the realm of diplomacy and a command and color's game. With the gameplay being weighted to fully enable asynchronous play with no mid-turn interruptions. It would be possible to play physically, but rather clumsy given the simultaneous execution.

I've done a cursory review of the main technical overviews and details in the Wiki and believe from a technical perspective I can shape my idea cleanly within the limitations of what the BGA engine offers (based on what is achievable in a physical game).

Thanks, can't believe I missed that. I skimmed the first 3 pages of threads and searched on various things.

So I have no intention of commercially publishing it physically or digitally. Doing it just as a hobby.

From my reading of the FAQ; it's allowed, but you want to make clear it's not likely to get much traction given it's an unknown game.
And I guess you don't want unbalanced (semi complete) games cluttering up your game catalogue.

I will continue my search for an alternative development platform and then see how they compare and affect creative choices 🙂

Have you found any alternatives? I would like to create some simple, free print-and-play games to learn coding. I made some in TableTopSimulator, but i would like to make an app. Im thinking Godot Engine maybe?

If it's to learn coding Godot or Unity would work fine. But they don't lend themselves to board games all that well. There's a lot of overhead which you would need to care about.
The most simple thing I would recommend is to take a HTML+JS+CSS approach without fancy frameworks as all you want is move sprites around with a little bit of logic behind :-)
