Conceeding?

Post by mycupoftea »

Can't we/you prohibit conceeding with just say 2-3 turns left? Or even better, let the plater ask for permission to conceede like you do to abandon a game. Just as you can't conceede until 50% is played I don't think you should be able to when you played ~95% of the game.

I've had it happen at last 5 times that people concede as I'm finishing my last turn (just to rob you of the satisfaction of seeing your end score). This is not against the rules of the site, and I have NO problem with it in the majority of games but in Wingspan I think seeing your final score and compeeting against your own high scores is a big part of the attraction of the game, at last for me.

Anyone who agrees?

I absolutely agree with this. I love experimenting with strategies and playing different combinations of birds just to see the effects on scores. It's very annoying having someone concede before you see the eventual outcome of your work, particularly if the game is nearing an end. Even if you are getting clobbered, as happens to all of us from time to time, you have take your whoopin', it's only polite.

I am a conceeder, but i fully agree with you, past 80% of the game there is no point conceeding anymore. You have to realise your defeat very soon.
Saying this i'm very not sorry towards player beiing sad when i conceed, i'm not going through the pain of watching your perfect engine working while i struggle with a bad draw.

I don’t like wasting my time so I only play if there is a chance of winning that can be at 50% ,60% , 70% etc. It is more rare to concede so late e.g. at 90% as you normally know by then.

I am surprised to hear people are bothered by this. As I said I dont like wasting my time so if someone is losing pretty badly I prefer if they concede personally. There is no point to the game any more.

I guess it’s all a matter of perspective

Perhaps the disconnect lies between those trying to manage their stats most efficiently and those who are participating as part of an exchange with another player?
I'd like to see a feature that allows players to indicate their primary motivation. That way I could choose to play with players who are more/less likely to concede.

I fall on the side of wanting to play primarily as an exchange with another player, not because I need to win. Regardless, I get not wanting to waste time if it's a game of 20 mins. But if we're talking 4 mins and you concede with 3 moves to go? It's like being that driver who has to overtake you, just to sit still in traffic as long as you but one car ahead. It's not about wasting your time. It's 30 seconds. You're not more efficient - you're just disrespectful to the other player. And probably having a mini tantrum because you lost.
If you're such a player I ask that you not waste MY time.

I would think I would be satisfied if board game arena just gave the option to the remaining player to play out the rest of the match solo if they wanted to, which I'd be much more likely to do if the concession happened late in the game. That way, the conceding player can go do something else as they wanted to, the remaining player can play out their engine if they wanted to, and not much has to be done on the site's side as this option already exists in three player games when one person drops out mid-game. Thoughts?

I wish players could concede earlier than the 50% mark frankly, that marker is just nonsense. But yes, if you know you're going to lose, definitely concede, I came here to play my opponent, not watch materials get shuffled around in an already determined outcome. I have no interest in solitaire. "Oh looky, watch me brainlessly put eggs on my bird cards!" is not interesting. If you think you can top what I'm doing, play on, but otherwise, scoop.

Well, I come here to play, not to win. I don't care if the win/loss is already clear, I want to see the cards shuffled around, to try more things (and to maybe be surprised by a sudden streak of luck, which turns "already decided" game 180°). I have no interest in rat race of emotionless "win-win-win" as fast as you can in as many games as you can, the treadmills belong to gym, not to relaxing hobby.
It's a pity we cannot really chose people based on such preferences. Unfinished game feels like it was a waste of my time, regardless of who wins.

Isn't that exactly what "Friendly" mode is for?
