Are tournaments typically seeded?

Do they look at ELO and match up the highest ELO with the lowest in the first round and so on? Or are match ups randomly assigned? Is it different from tourney to tourney?

The last time I checked, Single Elimination tournaments are seeded by Elo. So if you have the second-lowest Elo at the start of the tournament, your first match will be against the player with the second-highest Elo.

I'm not sure how it's done with Multiplayer Elimination tournaments, I haven't really looked into it. For Swiss tournaments, I could not find a pattern, so I concluded the first encounter is likely a random draw.

In "Groups Stage" tournaments, the groups are assigned based on Elo at the start of the tournament, the top player in Group 1, the second-highest-ranked player in Group 2, etcetera. If there are four groups, then player #5 gets assigned to Group 1. So Group 1 would consist of players ranked 1, 5, 9, 13, etc.; Group 2 would have players ranked 2, 6, 10, 14, etc.; and so forth.

Thank you for getting back to me. The one I just started in is my first ad seemed to work out that way. Mine is high-ish and I'm playing someone with a low-ish one
