sad experience with elo

Post by jigglypuffan »

we were 4 players playing.. 2 persons had higher elo than me.. i win , but one person ( a new person) left at last turn..

i only got a +3 instead of big raise

leaving at last turn should not cancel all the game.. just make the player skip turn we are this far..

Sad story, but luckily this doesn't happen often. I agree that he could just be skipped, the problem is: what is enough far in the game to be considered ok skipping instead of cancelling the game? This has to be different from game to game, and I doubt BGA infrastructure supports it. And even if we set such a minimum, then don't you have the same problem with a similar situation where the player leave 1 move before the minimum?
Bottom line, I think it's just not worth the effort to regulate such a rare event

I understand your frustration. Unfortunately there's just no perfect solution.

You won now, but it's not always certain you would also have won if they had not been skipped.
Say on their final turn they would have claimed a track you wanted. And you only win because them being skipped leaves it open for you to take.
Or what if you just barely win from 2nd place because your longest route points put you ahead. But the skipped player could have taken the longest route instead in their skipped turn.

As unfortunate as it is to gain less points than you deserved. It's much much worse to lose points just because another player left the game. Especially for the high elo players, as they can go down a lot from just a single game. But often only gain 1 or 2 points per win.

There's no accounting for this. So the better solution is to just give everyone something so nobody is too badly affected.
