Playing Weaker for Real

Post by JohnnyCyclops »

I've really enjoyed learning Azul on BGA in the last two months. I'm thinking of buying the physical game to play at home, but worried I'll have a large advantage (at first) over the person I usually play with who doesn't know the game at all but might eventually come to enjoy it like I do. I was thinking of weakening my initial advantage, and came up with a couple of options. I wonder if other players have ideas.

1. Let the weaker player take two turns initially (although this will load up their first round board with more tiles)
2. Always let the weaker player go first each round (and maybe not charge them the one point it costs)
3. Give them one of each tile 'off the side of the board' that they can add in when they might need them

And then I ran out of ideas?

I've got reasonably good at the game to the point it would likely need my playing partner 20-30 real games to catch up, by which time they may have become jaded by the game if I just play hard all the time.

I wouldn’t do go first every round, that will really impact their ability to learn one of the most strategic parts of the game.

I say no mercy personally

I’d just look at my own board and not look at theirs. The most unpleasant part of Azul is getting blocked (especially by someone way above your level), so this approach handicaps you and avoids some unpleasantness while your partner learns.

Thanks Dan, that’s a great idea. And you’re right about blocking.

Had to Google 'komi' but yes, a points head start, or me on a negative starting position.

I am only thinking this is needed for the first few games until they find their feet and hopefully come to both enjoy the game and grasp the strategies on offer.
