New game 'TICHU'

Post by gaze38 »

Bjr, I know you must have a lot of requests for development of games, but there is one that goes to partiques BGA.This is the card game 'Tichu.
Chinese game played by team of two and is at the intersection of rummy, mahjong, coinche, bridge. Discard a game, tactical, easy to learn who meets a great success with all those to whom I speak.
Thank you to consider this request.

Yes, it's a great game, and more than 200 players would like to see it on BGA (see BGA proposed games list on boardgamegeek.com). (To be fair, more than 200 players have expressed on BGG that they would like to see it on BGA.)
But there could be a problem: in Tichu you can play bombs at any moment, even whent it's not your turn. How could this be implemented online? (How is it implemented on BSW or on other gaming sites?) Do players have to play very fast when they want to play it? (which could be hard/unfair for players with a slow connection or a slow computer) Otherwise I think it's possible to prevent people from playing during 2 or 3 seconds when it's their turn, to let other players time to play a bomb if they can and want. But maybe this delay would annoy players? Would it annoy you? What do you think of this?

Hi, there is a game on BGA that is in the same game family than Tichu: Haggis.
Did you try it?

We'd be happy to have Tichu too, and a developer actually started working on it, but it didn't get finished and the project is currently inactive.

Yeah, I had seen that Haggis was the same kind of game, and wanted to try it, but never took the time.
(Il se pourrait que je continue le projet tichu sur bga studio un jour, mais j'ai un gros jeu à finir !)

Having played both, Haggis and Tichu are similar. Tichu does have the team aspect, so that does add an element of play not found in Haggis. Everybody guaranteed to have a bomb in Haggis is something not found in Tichu.

The timing of the bombs is a major issue with implementation here, especially in turn-based games. Not an insurmountable issue, but a major one.
Does the implementation wait for all people to specify "I don't want to play a bomb" after 3 passes (making it up to 6 days between actual plays in a 1 move/day game)? [[ Player A plays an Ace. Player B, C, D passes. D has a bomb, but thinks B also has one, so is waiting for them to play it. When they don't, player D decides to bomb. ]]
Does the implementation automatically skip a player if they don't have a bomb (letting everyone know the player has one if it pauses)?
Does the implementation allow an "I want to bomb if it passes 3 times" button, in which case both partners bomb the same trick?
Does it allow "I reserve the right to bomb," which smart players will always use (threatening to have a bomb even if they don't -- and if the option is not allowed, it reverts to the problem above of skipping players who don't have a bomb).

Side note for those familiar with Tichu but not Haggis -- Haggis only allows playing bombs on your turn, while Tichu allows playing bombs at any time. This is why Haggis does not have these problems.

Like I said, problems. This being the internet, someone is going to be upset with any implementation.

And, all of that being said, I'd still like to see Tichu on BGA :)

I wasn't even thinking about turn-base. To me Tichu isn't really playable turn-based, none of the options you list are acceptable in my opinion.
And I'm still interested in players' opinions about how to deal with this in real-time mode. So if any of you would like to see Tichu on BGA, answering the questions in my first post could help :) (I said "could", no undertaking here)

On "Tichupro" after the three passes in a row the game goes into a collecting cards phase. The user sees the screen flashing, "gathering" during this time, i think its 3 or 5 seconds, anyone can bomb.

It works pretty well.
