I created a table but was added to the table with different settings?

Post by Chiffa of Kettari »

I wanted to play a few of quick turn-based games (not Arena) so I created an 8 turns/day table, set the time interval and posted it. Now I'm added to the table for this game with 2 turns/day. How did this happen? Yes, "flexible" slider was on, but I thought it doesn't matter if I am starting the table from scratch. When I join other people tables (manually), it's always their settings, not whatever I have set up on the game page.

Now I am stuck in a game which I won't be able to play, as I have time in next couple of days, but not after. Why did this happen? Shouldn't my table be run with my settings?

Well, the flexible slide matters, even if it’s your table. The new lobby doesn’t really discriminate if you created the table or someone else, it mostly indicates you want to play with these settings.
Just turn off the flexible slide and you won’t have this problem next time.

Thank you for the answer, I'll take care to turn this off... but this is extremely weird.

Then... what I am paying premium for? I thought premium means I can create tables with the settings I like any time I want. I can join other people's tables without being premium, so if this explanation is true then "premium" isn't any different from non-paying options.

When I started to create the table, there was only 1 other table available, and it had different number of players (2; I wanted 4), so I definitely wasn't added to the existing table. So, it seems that what happened was: I created a table with my settings then later some other player was added there and their settings have overridden mine? Why? Again, I would get exactly the same result if I was a non-premium member looking to join other tables. What perks does the premium have, then?

Also, I join other people's tables about as often as I create my own, and absolutely never were my settings carried to the table I joined, I got what was said in the table decription every time, so I couldn't imagine it would work this way. I will change the settings from now on, but this feature definitely isn't planned well.

Maybe turning off the "flexible" setting will work, as the other poster said. However, the way I guarantee I get what I want is by NEVER using the fancy "intuitive" single-game lobby. Never. Not to join games. Not to start my own table. I do everything from the "Play Now" lobby,

It definitely did. I was able to start the table with the settings I wanted.

Hm. I usually join from "Play now" with the very convenient list of all games I want to check, but create tables from single-game page. I'll try to create tables in the old lobby too, thanks for the advise!

Premium lets you play premium games (among a few other things, see here: https://boardgamearena.com/premium), you can still start tables with whatever setting you like if the game is non-premium. BGA is actually very generous (in my opinion) because you can do quite a lot with a premium account. Personally, I pay because I think they're worth supporting, and the benefits are a bonus.

That said, the new lobby is terrible for the situation you describe, and I also don't use it as such, as others have said. I do use it sometimes to setup games where I am specifically inviting players, not allowing just anyone to join, and for Arena tables which has no manual selection, but if I want a non-Arena game that anyone can join, I always go via Play Now so I can be sure I will control the settings, although it looks like turning off the flexible slider may do the same.

I don't understand what is everyone here having problems with. The flexible slider is there for you to declare whether you're fine with joining tables with different settings than what you specified. You declared that you ARE fine with it, so don't complain when you're thrown into a table with a different setting.

PS - I've never used the old "play now" lobby, I didn't even know that it existed until I visited the forums. I've always only used the new per-game one.

One problem the new single-game lobby has is just that: it's for a single game. You can't join queues for multiple games at one time all in one place. This is not an issue if you're waiting for a very popular game that literally fills in seconds, but some of us want the option to get in a queue for multiple unpopular games and play whichever one fills first.

When you use the new lobby, you're not necessarily starting a table. Rather, you're informing the site what settings you would accept playing with, and the site matches you with other players with overlapping preferences. If you want to be strict about what settings you'll play with, you need to specify that explicitly with the new lobby, or (and this is my preference), stick to the old lobby.
