classic / easy / 6-verifier game... correct guess in 45 secs with no verifier tested...

Post by Adso of Melk »

...from my opponent!

https://boardgamearena.com/8/turingmach ... =415353031
In the chat box after I declared myself as utterly amazed, they told me that "this game's answer is 225 or 441". How very brilliant to guess that in 45 seconds with no verifier tested!!!

1) "This game's answer is 225 or 441"... shouldn't there be just one possible correct code for each game? or am I misunderstanding something? Did they get to 2 possible solutions just by looking at 5 verifiers and betting on the outcome of the 6th one? ...again all of that in 45 seconds??? :D
2) Even admitting to myself that such brilliant deductions with 6 verifiers in such a short time are not beyond the realms of possibility, I'll run the risk to come across as dumb/obtuse and say that I find it more likely that the opponent already played the very same game & somewhat memorized the correct code.

If 2) is true, either there are too few games for every possible mode combination, so much so that after a while people tend to remember the correct codes (to be honest there is a specific game that tends to come up quite often in the classic / easy / 4-verifier combination), or I am indeed too dumb to play this online surrounded by so many geniuses and will limit myself to play it with my more average IQ-equipped friends in real life :D

Comments anyone?

I mean the answer is always 225 (252 522) or 441 (414 144) in this type of game.
B and E give you the only answer.

Yes, a given combination of verifiers gives a unique solution.

But you don't know which are the verifiers, you only know, for each one, a subset of a few it could be. So basically, you take all the possible combinations of verifiers compatible with the criteria cards, and rule most of them out because they either don't give a unique solution or result in some verifier being redundant. At the end you're left with a small number of possible solutions, and you figure which one it is by "asking the machine". In some cases there's only one possible solution and you don't need to ask. Or there are only two and you can just try your luck.
