Game recommendations for someone new?

Post by itaachi »

Hello all,
I'm quite new to boardgames, started playing King of Tokyo last week, was great fun so decided to try some others.

Any recommendations for a newb?

Cheers

Well, besides King of Tokyo, what games do you like?
Also, how much experience do you have with eurogames, vs American style games (Risk, Monopoly, Life, etc.)?
Do you like themed games (you're a chief in charge of a stone-age tribe who needs to gather resources and build buildings) vs abstract games (you need to place pieces for the pure sake of winning the game [such as Quarto])?

We might be able to give better suggestions if we know this information, because there's a lot of variety out there. The learning curve on some concepts is fairly steep, and if you don't have a patient teacher it can be frustrating.

And, welcome to BGA :)

Hi,

I would recommend to start from games with rules that are easy/quick to learn and are best to play with >3 players. There are several such games available on BGA, Saboteur and 6 Nimmt! to name a few. You should have a great deal of fun playing them several times.

Then check out other games that do require some time to just get familiar with the rules. When you are happy with your understanding of the rules, check some games in progress (as a spectator) to see how to move around the board etc. Then play them few times to see if you like it or not.

And finally - have fun!

Hello! I like King of Tokyo too. I usually play as the Mecha Dragon. :) I've yet to see how the expansion plays. I'm sure there's at least one!

I suggest you browse boardgamegeek or other sites such as that to browse and see for yourself which games you might be interested in.
