Had to quit game due to security patching

Security patching on my laptop made it impossible to continue the game...very slow. Is there anyway to avoid negative Karma in that case?

Nope. Once you start a real-time game you are responsible for being able to finish it. Any external real-world circumstances are irrelevant. But that's why there's a karma system. Assuming unexpected things happen fairly rarely, you will take a temporary karma hit, but work it back soon once you play out your other games normally.

For this case assuming you had another device (e.g. phone), you could also play out the game there.

Fletcheese is right - you're ultimately responsible for being able to play in real time. However, stuff like this happens to all of us and no one thinks twice about a player with a karma rating in the 90% range. Just play a few quick games and you'll be back up to 100.
