How to communicate?

Post by Uxorious »

I have yet to play but I’m curious how players communicate. Do people use the text chat or audio?

Before rolling dice, you can communicate in chat for strategy. But after rolling, no communation. You communicate by the order of dice and the modules you play on.

Example: First die 6 on axis module can say "I have only big values, sorry to put a 6 but you have 4 dice to react accordingly."

I used audio, but I think someone needs to be a premium user to activate it.

I use chat rather than audio. One can use the translate function in chat if the teammates don’t speak a common language.

When playing with experienced players, I’ve landed successfully a few times without chatting at all except to say “hello” and “good game.”

I just reread the rules:
Discuss your strategy at the beginning of every round. For example, “We really need to get rid of that plane,” or “Let’s make sure we advance 2 spaces.”
You are not allowed to discuss the dice. Saying things like, “If you get a 6, put it here,” or “Use your weakest die to do this action,” is not allowed. Once
you have finished discussing, roll all 4 of your dice behind your screen so the other player can’t see them. From this moment on, both players must be
completely silent until the end of the round, except for correcting possible rule errors.
It's pretty clear to me that you are allowed to discuss your goals for the round, but not the dice values even before the dice are rolled. I also think it to be ok to discuss which spots you try to fill first. After rolling the dice you may not discuss gameplay at all, except for rule errors. So talking about dice values is not allowed, even in strategy phase!

According to the rules this is not allowed.

I must admit I didn't follow the rules correctly in my games playing with friends, but we should abide by the rules next time! I still think it is ok to loosen the rules when you are playing with a beginner in order to make them understand how this game works. For fairness to the community this should be played as a game in friendly mode (former "training mode") though.

I read Korenar's post as meaning "If a player places a 6 on the axis module as their first die, this move might mean 'I have only big values, sorry to put a 6 but you have 4 dice to react accordingly' - the player is not actually saying anything, but rather 'communicating' by picking early moves so that the other player can draw inferences about what dice are available and can adjust with their moves.

It should've been 'might mean' rather than 'can say'.

You are quite right, I misunderstood what Korenar was saying. Sorry!

Just speak like the game doesn't contain any die at all. "We need to slow down" or "Need to pay attention to the flaps" or whatever is fine. How that is achieved is left unsaid. Then you obviously have some indirect communication when you place the die that you pick up on as you play more with one person. As said a few posts above, when you play with a more experienced person you barely need to talk at all.
