Regarding the wiki

Post by Sawyer Einherjar »

Heyo boardgame administrators,

The other day i was helping out Django with translating the wiki page with guidelines for translating into Deutsch.
However, as we were working on it, we noticed that the hyperlinks on the page as displayed on boardgamearena linked to two different wiki pages for the same subject namely:

http://de.doc.boardgamearena.com/Translation_guidelines
and
http://de.doc.boardgamearena.com/Translationguidelines

now that the page has updated itself to the german version the first hyperlink is no longer available on the boardgame guideline page. But the page still exists.

As the page became fully Deutsch it seemed a bit random to leave the page name (Translation guidelines) in English. So Django translated that as well but after changing this we thus create a third page:

http://de.doc.boardgamearena.com/%C3%9C ... ichtlinien

So basically atm there exist 3 pages which are exactly the same but they are linked to from different hyperlinks, from which we're not able to change some ourselves.

Any thought on this? Would be nice if the hyperlinks on this page http://de.boardgamearena.com/#!doc/tran ... guidelines would link to the correct Deutsch versions and thus be able to only have one page life and delete the server filling nonsense :). However, we cannot change the hyperlinks on boardgamearena ourselves (very understandable!) and thus when you'd need to upkeep this for every langauge its probs a load of work :S.

So wondering what your ideas/vision are for these wiki pages and their translated counterparts.

Greets,
Sawyer

PS: So many thanks for implementing: Search on player name (easy to filter out bot translators now! :D) for the translation page and the ability to sort the bug table on other attributes rather than amounts of votes alone!

Great work translating this page! (as far as I can tell from studying Deutch in school 15 years ago ;) )

As for URLs, we need them to stay the same between languages (only the language prefix must change, as it would be quite a headache for us to maintain links in the website otherwise).
So you should'nt change http://de.doc.boardgamearena.com/Translationguidelines to http://de.doc.boardgamearena.com/%C3%9C ... ichtlinien. Only the content of the wiki should be translated, which means that the title of the page will stay in English, since in a wiki, the title of the page makes the URL. If you want it to be perfect, you would need to replace Translationguidelines by a redirect page to Cbersetzungsrichtlinien. The content of this redirect page would be #REDIRECT [[Cbersetzungsrichtlinien]].

As for the Translation_guidelines VS Translationguidelines problem, there should indeed be only one page linked from the website. But I didn't get exactly where you found the difference?
(on http://de.boardgamearena.com/#!translat ... cale=de_DE there is only one link to Translationguidelines)

prior to translating the page (which has all be done by Django, i only assisted in the lay out issue) there was an extra line on the boardgame page that redirected to the Translation guidelines wiki page, which after creation of the Deutsch wiki page dissapeared. Now the only hyperlink is to Translationguidelines.(in the white bar).

I understand, and drew same conclusion already, that you'd prefer that all wiki page names stay the same in English. However, in this case it be nice that it links to the correct grammar one. so to Translation Guidelines instead of Translationguidelines. When going to the Dutch boardgame page the hyperlink also links toe Translation guidelines. Could you change that ? :)

Also i don't know how you can implement automatic redirects on wiki.
Does that work by typing solely #Redirect[[Cbersetzungsrichtlinien]] on the page of Translation guidelines?

Sawyer

Done, it was indeed incorrect (not the same URL in the help section and the translation section).
Unfortunately, the string "Also, please take a look at the translation guidelines before you begin." will need to be translated again due to the change, as the URL wasn't a parameter (it now is).
Also i don't know how you can implement automatic redirects on wiki.
Does that work by typing solely #Redirect[[Ubersetzungsrichtlinien]] on the page of Translation guidelines?
Yes, exactly. I just did it in the Deutsch wiki (see http://de.doc.boardgamearena.com/index. ... ction=edit).
I think it's the best solution as it allows to have a unique point of entry (http://de.boardgamearena.com/#!doc/Tran ... guidelines) with the content of the fully translated wiki page (http://de.doc.boardgamearena.com/%C3%9C ... ichtlinien).
Hope this works well for you!
