Not sure where this „only winning matters“ comes from here all the time. Also not how we play such games in RL. If 1st is unreachable, the rest games for 2nd / 3rd / not last.

And not everyone's goal is to optimise their elo. Even with unranked losers, players may prefer being second than last. Even with ranked losers players may lose all interest if they cannot win.

But do you intentionally try to make the game end faster while being 2nd? Would you help the 1s place win faster if it means that other 2 players who actually might have a chance of winning if the game ends longer, would not have that chance? You would ruin the game for 2 players in order to help 1 player win "unhonorably" and you getting the 2nd place.

Guess they just don't like it. No other reason:

You are constantly ignoring 'runaway leaders or clear winners' and 'when the chance to get the first place is slim'. Stop beating a straw man.

But.. even that does not matter.
