Through the ages

Post by giggs »

Couple of suggestions that would make the gameplay a but more smoother.

1.You should be able to see the civic cards the other person has drawn into their hands. It isn't hidden information as you get to see which cards they draw from the board and rather than having to write down or try to remember what they have. Especially if playing multiple games over asynchronous play.

2. Same sort of deal but with which cards you have seeded. Once youve seeded a card unless you remember which can be difficult over longer peiods of time. Of course you wouldn't know which seeded card would appear next but at least you have an idea of the possibilities which you've seeded.

3. Have a display for each players civil and military actions. When its your turn it displays your own but you have to count up your opponents manually. With a easy display it would make it easier to plan your turns.

Thanks

I totaly agree that the civic cards of other players should be open. If not, at least a list with the remaining civic cards of each type should be shown.
This sugestion is specially important for turn-based mode. If I am playing a lot of games at same time, it is very hard to remember which civic cards were already taken by the other players.

Personal seeded events should be open to yourself for the same reasons.

I don't know how player resignation is implemented. By the rules, somone could leave the game during its political phase, and that action should lead to a normal lose and not to an abandon. Resignation is specially important to the complete game because of the war mechanics.

I strongly agree with the above suggestions.

More suggestions:

1) There is a warning about corruption if you pass, but this warning should be constant visible so that you can take your turn with it in mind (kind of like how the unhappy face turns red if you're threatened with civil disorder)
2) In the same vein, you should be able to undo your turn in realtime mode.
3) The adjusted costs of building or upgrading should be displayed
4) The total number of civil/military actions should be visible. During your turn, you can tell, but you can't tell how many your opponent has without tallying it up manually. Same with colonization bonus.

This game absolutely needs an, "Undo last turn" option. It's too long, complicated, and interwoven of a game to always realize that some move that you're doing is going to really mess up your game or lose on a simple mis-click.

I like the conception of doing this at BGA and I like the live play aspect, but unless something like this is fixed, it's unplayable. It's too frustrating and disappointing to lose an hour of two of playing because of simple error.

Agree with all above. I think a dump/burn food civic action should be added when your population is maxed with cost equivalent to the cost of the last worker. With poor planning in the current state you can end up in a corruptiontrap where there is no way to spend your food for a few turns before game ends. Maybe this is intended.

Another suggestion for all games in general but especially for long games like through the ages. Add a transform function from regular game to turn based. It will be useful when you for whatever reason cant finish the game you started. Already had quite a few games when somebody had to leave and this will solve that problem.

This would be nice, but it's actually against the rules. The manual explicitly forbids any manipulation of food or resources that isn't spent on "real" activities. The best option in your situation might be to aggress and sacrifice, but frankly that is a somewhat rare situation to be in.

totally agree and on long games could also be useful to see the past events

This game in particular is completely unplayable without that feature, and also a monumental waste of time as no game will go to completion without error. Its just a contest of who blows the game first through a serious misclick, likely hours into the game, and ruins both the challenge and enjoyment for both players.
Now, if you could only find out why an undo button is so dramatically disliked by those who run this place, you might have the chance at getting a playable game. As an alternative, there are several reputable sites with TTA on them, and as a bonus actually laid out in a format that makes sense.

I'd like to start saying that I'm enjoying very much this game online, thus I'd like to thank the people who've been developing this version for BGA. It's particularly a pleasure when you don't have to get involved in the production phase, when everything is neatly taken care of by the computer ;)

This said, I had a chance to play it today on a real table, the real boardgame I mean, and I've noticed a few differences. I don't know whether they've been introduced in the BGA version for any reason, so I just wanted to give some hints:
* happy faces: there's a limit of 8, in the boardgame, while the BGA version seems to allow an infinite number of them;
* you don't really know how the points have been calculated, in the end, while some other BGA game give a kind of resume at the end of the game;
* in the complete advanced version of the game, you have to draw 4 cards that will give the additional bonuses at the end of the game, while the BGA version seems not to have that feature;
* it's true - as somebody else was saying in this thread - that you can still see your opponents' drawn civic cards, even when they've not been played yet;
* some civic cards seem to be missing in the BGA version.
