points-how scored?

Post by KARKAJU »

I do not understand/know how points are determined for taking first or even second place in CATAN games in Arena with three players.

Sometimes I win just one point, sometimes I win more.

Sometimes I lose up to four points or just one.

I dont get it... Can someone PLEASE explain.

First of all, if you play Arena, you win/lose Elo like in any non-Arena game.

Then, you win/lose EAS points (EAS = Elite Arena Score) which work very similar to ELO. This EAS score is used to rank the players in Arena but your EAS score is hidden as long as you are not in Elite league.

Additionally, before you reach Elite, you are in different leagues (bronze, silver, gold,...) which have not much meaning at all. They simply are there to stimulate you to play on till you reach Elite. After each game you win/lose shields which help you progress to the next level. The number of shields you earn depends on the league levels your opponents are in. The shields you win/lose are completely independ on the strength (ELO, EAS) of your opponents - they only depend on the league levels your opponents are.

Since your question is about shields, the answer to your question lies in the 3rd paragraph. If your opponents are in much lower leagues than yourself you might win very few or none shields even if you win.

Since you still earn regular ELO and (hidden) regular EAS points even if you earn no shields, I have added the first two paragraphs to provide the context of the bigger picture.

I finished this game and i don't think the score was fair at all: https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=447483642

It was ended early by one player because the other one had no more time to play but... I'm in Diamond league and got +0, the other player who won is Elite and gets +11. How is this ok?

Also, i was ahead of him at the moment he decided to end the game. I don't think this would affect the points you earn but in any case, i should win more right?

You are mixing up AES points and shields. This might be confusing - hope my explanation will help.

You got 0 shields and an unknown amount of EAS points (those are shown only when you reach Elite, but they are calculated from the first Arena game)
Your opponent got 0 shields (since he is in Elite level already) and 11 EAS points.

You are correct that the number of shields and the number of EAS points does not depend on who was leading the game at the moment the 3rd player left. You and the 2nd player tied each other and you both won against the 3rd player.

[edit: The 2nd player had 1526 AES points and won 11 AES points to reach 1537 AES points. You were the strongest player on the table (according to ELO) - thus it is well possible that you also were the strongest player according to AES points.
If you had more than 1526 AES points at the moment of the game you have won less than 11 AES points and if you had less than 1526 AES points have won more than 11 AES points.]

Ah ok, thank you for your answer. I could not understand it because the game was showing +0 on my player, so i was just assuming i wasn't earning any points at all. But as you said, the AES looks like it's hidden until you reach Elite so i actually won some points.

By the way i was able to reach Elite in the next 2 games and i currently have 1676 so it is true that i probably had more.
I didn't think it was possible to have more points than your opponent when he is in a higher league.

Again, thank you :)
