rude players being time police

Post by BizzleDizzle »

I have played a two games recently where other players have started insulting players they thought were playing too "slow" for their liking and telling them to hurry up, and then started specifically targeting those players (then me when I tried to stand up for the "slow" players). I did report them after the game but it really takes the fun out of the game when you have players being rude in the chat and just trying to rush through the game as quick as possible. (This was in a "normal" speed game and the other players were well within the time, they just weren't playing almost instantly like the rude players seemed to want.)

How do you deal with it?
I've been requesting a "blitz" mode, because "fast" speed is still ridiculously slow. I've given up hope that people will implement it, because the site owners value "finished games" over "fun games".

I give red-thumbs to slowpokes, and make a note on them that they disconnect frequently/play slowly.
Blitz timing has been requested many times, by many players, but the site owners won't implement it. It causes a lot of frustration with players who have limited free time and want to play quick games. Just gotta deal with it.

They should take that up with the owners of the site then or go play somewhere else instead of being rude to people who are just trying to enjoy the games and play by the rules.

No, those players should deal with it. The OP did exactly the right thing. You are not obligated any faster than is necessary to avoid running out of time, and if other players are abusive that is what the report function is for. That there is a section of toxic players on the site is unfortunate but BGA does clearly make efforts to deal with it.

There are players on this site who deliberately play slow.

They wait until there is only 10 seconds left on their clock before making a move.

And the response to this is giving them a red thumb. The response is not berating them, because they can play slow for whatever reason, even malicious ones. The fact that they are allowed to use all their time is even in the message you get when you see the pop-up that says "my opponent isn't playing. What should I do?" So no, you don't just get to decide you think they are doing it deliberately (instead of spilling coffee in their laps. or being distracted by a child, or playing at work and trying to hide it, or innumerable other reasons) and harass them about it.

To be clear, I have given red thumbs to people I think took too long to make decisions given the game state, like they only had one valid option. What I have never done is say "what's taking so long? You only have one valid move."

There is a simple solution to this topic and that is to have an even faster clock for those players that like to play fast.

You are free to upvote this suggestion, but is has been there since 2021, so I wouldn't hold my breath on it getting implemented:
Please make it an option to have faster game modes. Giving roughly 3 minutes per turn is painful. Games that should take 5-10 minutes often take 30+ minutes and it's unbearable. Considering players can choose the game speed they want to play with it makes absolutely no sense to not have this option.

Do you really feel a message like that is offensive and needs reporting?
