Effect of card set settings

Post by AdamBomb »

I'm new to the revised edition of Agricola and have had to educate myself somewhat about the new decks of cards. I've gathered that the base game came with decks A&B, then expansions added new cards to those decks as well as introducing and expanding decks C-E. With that established, how does this map to the card set options available when starting a game of Agricola on BGA?
  • Competitive Level: Normal with no other card sets enabled = Decks A&B but is it just the base cards or does it include expansions?
  • C&D Cards: Obviously adds decks C&D. Does this create a game with just C&D or does it create a game with A-D?
  • New set of cards: ??? Does this add evenly to all decks or is it a complete replacement?
  • Even more cards: ??? Same question as above
I read elsewhere that there tend to be synergies within decks and possibly conflicts across decks, and advice to play with limited sets e.g. with only A&B or only C&D to minimize conflicts. Is this possible with the settings available?

There is weirdness in the revised expansions, and more weirdness in the BGA implementation of it's sets. Every game will have the base set, plus any sets you choose to include. The community mostly adopted a "more is better" approach to adding cards in so most games have all of the sets on BGA, or as is the case currently there may not yet be wholesale adoption of the newest set with some games excluding it.
To go into the settings mentioned more specifically.

Competitive level: beginner is the family game, normal allows all cards in the chosen sets, competitive removes cards in the banlist from the chosen sets.
C&D Cards: It adds the C&D decks, but the only cards marked in the C&D set are from the Wizkids mini expansion. This has some very weird and I believe unintended behaviour. If you exclude C&D you won't get any C&D cards, even if they're in other sets.
New set of cards: This adds about half of the cards from among all of the A-D expansions. They are mostly the easier half to program, with some cards that were programmable being excluded due to advisement by a few strong players to the developers that such cards would likely be banned immediately.
Even more cards: This adds a lot of the rest of the cards in A-D expansions, plus the E deck. E deck is great, the cards that were excluded from New set of cards tend to be not great - some are complex effects that were hard to program, some cards really need to be banned.

If you are new to Agricola as a whole, the base game tends to have simpler cards that promote a more new-player friendly experience (the game can be about starvation more than farming if the table collectively mismanages it, and the revised base set gives you stuff to focus on that avoids this starvation problem), with the complexity going up a little bit with C&D and up again a lot with the New set.

Thanks for this response! I have a few clarifying questions if you don't mind:

I'm having trouble parsing the bolded section. What does it mean that only some of the added cards are "marked"? I thought there were at least 3 expansions that added and expanded the C&D decks. Were those not added, just the Wizkids mini expansion? (That doesn't sound right but I'm struggling to understand that part)

Question about the bolded section: does this refer to harder-to-implement cards that weren't in the "new set" and expert players recommended against? So adding "Even more cards" adds cards that expert players would prefer to see banned? I take it that they aren't banned yet if Competitive mode is selected. It sounds like adding "Even more cards" is a mixed bag of adding E (good) and adding complex and/or unbalanced A-D expansion cards (bad), is that right?

Went and quickly researched what the physical cards sets are actually called.
C+D on BGA with no new set of cards or even more cards is the same as consul dirigens to the best of my knowledge.
Corbarius + Dulcinaria cards are part of New set of cards and Even more cards sets. However, with C&D disabled these sets won't show up in your game (which is unintended weirdness).

To be clear about the "even more" set: the complex cards that were hard to program are mostly fine (such as oriental fireplace - it took work for the devs to make a card be a minor improvement and a major improvement at the same time, but it's not too weird or out there compared to anything else in the decks), but there are a few ridiculous power outliers that are mostly separate cards (e.g. estate master, craft brewery) that in the opinion of strong players break the game. It is fairly likely that there will be an update to the banlist adding a lot of these cards to the banlist such that they don't show up in competitive games when the set leaves alpha, but I don't know when this will be.

I posted a suggestion about this a while ago to simplify all this. If you agree please vote for it.

This will be simplified in the future, since there's no essential difference between the last batch of ABCD cards and this new batch (excluding the E deck). For now, we need to keep all the new cards separate since they're in alpha

That's great news!
