garzahd wrote: 02 January 2024, 15:04Undo of moves is very much appreciated, but a little inconsistent. It would be nice if there were an option to always offer an undo before ending your turn. Specifically, I made a misclick during an end-of-cycle card play and was unable to fix it despite having no new information.
Also suggested in two separate suggestions already. You can always undo during your turn. The end-of-round play is different because once you've played the card, another player is taking his turn already. It's a single action, not a whole turn. We can't allow you to undo without interfering with another turn that's now already in progress.

Quick rant: I have a disdain for undo in implementation. It's a completely thankless job. Players whine endlessly if it's not there. If it is there, players still complain, no matter how well it's implemented. I've built up my own custom undo algorithm that avoids the janky one BGA provides, which requires all players to refresh every time undo is used and used to (maybe still does?) grant the player more time and cause other problems. No matter how smoothly it's implemented, players continually complain that it's not granular enough or too granular. Why can't they undo just the most recent move? Why can't they undo more than the most recent move? Why weren't they warned that drawing a card or rolling dice (not in Maracaibo, per se) would prevent undoing? Sometimes I'll pour more hours into bolstering undo further in games, but it's rarely merited any positive feedback. Consequently, I'm always hesitant to use undo at all.

Okay, that wasn't a quick rant and I didn't mean to knock on your honest suggestion. Hopefully it's insightful all the same.

. . . . . . . . . . . .

Earnest request: Let me know if this sort of response is helpful or insightful, or if you'd rather forego it in the future. I realize people don't often get to peek behind the curtain and see why certain decisions are made, but I also understand that not everyone wants to, either.

Yes, this sort of response was helpful and insightful.

Regarding the undo button, thanks for the rant! It definitely helped me understand that I need to be more aware and grateful for the time that developers put into the more thankless features.

So, genuinely, thank you!

There are some games, such as Keyflower, that I consider unplayable because it lacks an undo button. I have only complained about the lack of the feature. One day, if a developer adds an undo button so I can begin enjoying such an awesome game, before this post, I unfortunately doubt that I would have thanked them.

I know that you were not seeking it, but still, great work on Maracaibo!

We reduced the end game timing a couple days ago at the publisher's suggestion. Glad to hear it's an improvement, especially as how the UI designer had to back out some earlier work for it.

The more I think about it, the more I can see the possibility of a first player advantage. Not just first pass at the first round actions, but also the possibility of getting more turns than later players overall.

The biggest problem, as you've likely surmised, is that undo is difficult to implement and easy to mess up. I've seen that it's a top requested site-wide issue, but I doubt it'll ever happen for old games because it needs to implented individually for each game.

@KNGoodtimes, please read the thread first.

I remember the maracaibo digi app having names for the ship upgrades. Just use them in the logs. They give a thematic understanding about the upgrades.

Charismatic Leader: (Free taking from the card display)
Expanded Living quarters: (6 hand card limit)
Upgraded Sails: (efficient movement for village actions)
Upgraded Cannons: (combat action for villages)
Iron coffers: (5 doubloons)
Minor treasure: (3 points)
Major Treasure: (6 points)
Weapon Trader: (village action for a combat point and a coin)
Bartering Mastering: (Village action for trading goods for points)
Command of the seas: (Village action for placing influence tokens in villages)
Jack of all Trades: (one time influence/expedition/points bonus)
Legendary Treasure: (10 points)

I can do that.

Please post a formal suggestion with that same text. I'll let it sit for a couple days to gather feedback, then add it to the game unless there's some discussion that needs to be addressed.

I'd love to, but I can't use that link (unexpected error - game not found - reference: PA 06/01 23:42:02)
I'm not a reviewer.

The normal bug report link (the one at the top of each forum page) will work also.

It could be that the link isn't working because you're not an alpha tester. I've added you to the Maracaibo alpha group in case that happens to be the reason.
