The post was NOT about timed games in general, or slow players. It was about players who use this opportunity to claim a clearly lost game as a win.
You think that other player should have gone easy on you and not boot you although you didn't stick to the time limit. But you're not going easy on them either. You assume their motivation as the most malicious intentions. That's harsh.
There are many things that could've gone through this players head. Here are some suggestions:
* This player is already ahead by so much and yet they want an even higher score - do they want to humiliate me even more?
* This player is already or almost over time, and yet they've got the nerves to use the undo turn? He shouldn't even consider that - I'll boot them to let this be educational for them.
* They were so slow the whole game. Ok they didn't break the time limit so far, but I prefer even faster play so this game was annoying for me the whole time. Usually at this time-setting players are much faster because you have to consider how long that incredibly long last turn takes before choosing the time settings. This player should have chosen a slower setting!
* The clock is a part of the game and an absolute requirement - the site should really make a loss automatically instead of having me to initiate me.
* After I clicked skip player, they had 20 seconds warning. When they saw I'm about to skip them, they should rush to the first possible move-ending.
* They should've made sure to bank more time before the last turn and plan ahead in what order they want to play that last turn so they wouldn't go over time.
* They could've asked if I'm willing to grant more time (before excessive use of undo) so they'd know that I'm not.
* I made suboptimal moves throughout the game because I play fast. So fast that I can even finish the most complex and long turns within my time limit. It's not a fair competition having to match up with a player that thinks everything through but can't stay within their time.
* I have been kicked many times on my last turn in Ark Nova so I guess that's normal behaviour on BGA
Oh Silene, I usually like your posts, but this one? There is so much to unpack here. I don't want to make this just a back and forth between us, but here it goes.
I didn't assume. There was no assuming of malicious intentions. There was nothing else but malicious intentions. What else was there. A friendly teaching about time usage? He simply had to enforce the time limit he had no choice? No this was his way to win a lost game, period.
I don't even know where to start on all the thought exploring of that player. That poor guy must have suffered terribly having to wait that additional 1 minute tops. You really give him a lot of credit why he pulled the trigger. HE WANTED THE WIN.
My excessive use of the undo button? Not sure where you got that from, not sure if you played Ark Nova. It's not Space base. If Ark Nova is too slow for you (even only once during the game) don't play heavy Euros.
He did it because it happened to him a lot ?. This one is not too bad. That's why I started this "discussion", I wanted to see how often it happens and how people feel about it (got my answer). Still, because a bad thing happened to him, and now he does the same. And yes, nothing in the world can convince me that this move isn't a bad thing. Legal yes, but still a very un-gaming move.
I am not going into the whole 'the timer is an important part of the game'. Not the right threat for that one ( said it so many times by now).
Whatever excuse was given in this long post, HE WANTED THE WIN.
I will not just play only with friends, because I can not believe that most players here are cool with this terrible move. In 4700 games I played here, I mostly met decent people who didn't find the need to win at any cost.
I will continue to never ever do that. I will talk (yes that is an option) to anyone who plays slowly. I will not use this to win a game. I have more self respect than to pull that one. I understand that people are different and I feel truly sorry for anyone who needs a win that badly. Outside the arena I hope we simply GAMING.
I read a lot of your posts, and I do believe that you are a reasonable person who loves gaming.
Hopefully we can agree to disagree and let this post die.
