Is expelling from game on last turn reportable?

Post by Aemulus Amicus »

Often times on Ark Nova the final turn exceeds the time limits set for the game. I am trying to do as much as possible in order to maximize my points. On at least 3 occasions I have had opponents who were clearly going to lose kick me from the game for exceeding the time limit only on my last turn. Should I report them to the moderators, or should I be responsible for not exposing myself to this risk, that is, ensuring to play the last turn quickly so that they have no opportunity to kick me?

Side note: it does seem that when one initiates the expulsion proceedings it slows down my computer.

Change that to "I am trying to do as much as possible in order to maximize my points within the time limit." and you'll be fine.

"opponnent is clearly losing" and "i go overtime to maximize points" sounds pretty obnoxious combined.

Play a slower setting or turnbased

On one hand I understand that there is a time limit for a reason, on the other hand I find it very bad mannered to kick someone who is actively playing their turn. For me the kick feature should only be used for cases where the opponent clearly disconnected or ragequit and is not going to come back.

Especially if it's in order to win a lost game I think it's just a cheap tactic and shows that some people are way too competitive about a game that is designed for entertainment. All this for what, a few ELO or arena points? They should just be a vague reflection of your skill level, not an end goal.

If you play Chess you should know losing on time is completely legit. Therefore, you should learn to manage your time better instead of blaming the loss.

Eh. I personally won't kick until it is clear someone has quit. Just doesn't seem fun. It'd violate the social contract for anyone I played with regularly. That said, random strangers on the Internet are not people I play with regularly.

So, if you join a fast game, you're agreeing to play fast. That said, if I was kicked on the last round, I'd likely block the player. (Assuming bga has a block feature)

Not reportable, but I'd say it's poor sportsmanship from them, especially considering animation times count against your clock. Sometimes even someone playing at max speed on that last turn can fall prey to this if they have multiple actions triggered (e.g. this happened to me in a close but very likely won game where my last turn included a hypnosis and 2 determinations from Eagle + board power where I even tried to skip my second determination turn during the 20 second countdown but lag + loading times meant I couldn't even skip it and confirm in time). Now, that is a very rare situation, but the general point of animations/lag/server loading times counting against your clock makes me think it is quite BM to do this to someone that is clearly playing the game, especially on the last turn just to avoid losing.

Not too familiar with Ark Nova however this post can easily apply to any game. If these games are turn based then you can modify the settings to give everyone more time. If the games are live then I have more sympathy with those you are playing with. People playing live are taking time out of their day to play that game and if you are there having a mass AP session to try and optimise a few more points then you are wasting the time of others. In games like this you should work out your moves while others are making theirs.

But in short no it is not reportable the most you can do is give them a red thumb. But again if these games are live I would look closer to home first.

I personally cannot understand why BGA has not implemented innovation, that has been around 20 years already in online poker tournaments called "time bank". In online poker player has X amount of extra thinking/action time in time bank, which can be used (automatically used) during whicever position of the whole tournament - in BGA:s implementation during game. This would solve all the problems.

For example: Fast speed game is like current settings + 2 minute time bank for the whole match.

With time bank feature they could even introduce new "ultra-fast" game speed option for all the slow play whiners out there, which could work like 2 minutes per turn + 3 minute time bank for the match.
