What order are turn based games listed on "games in progress"?

Post by Cos- »

On the https://boardgamearena.com/gameinprogress page, I used to think my turn based tables were listed in the order tables had been created. But at some point I noticed that wasn't true, so then I thought it was based on the time and date that the games actually started. But then that also turned out not to be true. So what does control the order?

It's roughly in order of date the tables were created or games started, but it's not consistently always following either of those orders.

I've never played arena so I don't know how this answer relates to turn based games. I thought all arena games were real time?

Also, with turn based games, most of the time it's not your turn in any of them at all, or maybe it's your turn in one or two but it's not your turn in most of them. Sorting by how long it has been your turn would only make sense for those games where it _is_ your turn, not all/most games where it's not.

Arena games can be real time or turn based, so that’s how it’s relevant.

I was just trying to help by sharing what I know. Beyond that I can’t help you.

Aren't games listed in the order where you have the least time left?

No.

Maybe the games where it's your turn are listed in that order - if so, that's nice. But for turn based games, most of the time it's not your turn on all or most games (like I said above) so that would not make sense. And it's very certainly not true for those tables, either. They're listed in an order that's very similar to date-time that the table was created, or date-time that the game started, regardless of what might be on your timer when it's someone else's turn.

It turns out that is not the case even for games where it is your turn. I just waited let it become my turn in several games, so I could check. Right now as I type this, it's my turn at four of them, and those four have floated to the top. However, the one where I have the least amount of time remaining on my clock - 11h55m - is the third one down out of four. On both of the two listed above it, and the one listed below it, I have more time. So it's not clear to me how these are sorted, either.

I posted a suggestion to have games sorted by the date and time the game started (which I think many people already think is what it does, but it doesn't) to have some options to control grouping:

https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=112630

My suggestion also makes clear that when games where it's your turn are shown at the top, they should be in order of how much time you have remaining to make your move. I tried to make this suggestion overall simple and straightforward while still being a significant improvement over the current gamesinprogress page for turn based games. If you agree that it would be an improvement, please click on that link and vote for it.

There was already at least one other suggestion for this: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=33455

I saw that suggestion, but it is vague, and also not the same. In theory both of these suggestions could be done, they're not incompatible, but they're not asking for the same things. Also, I think mine is clearer and more concrete so has a better chance of being implemented as suggested.
