One solution :
When a table is full, the table remains in the lobby (with all places marked as full).
If EVERYONE in the table accepts, then the game is started, and the table is removed from the lobby.
If any player declines, then the table remains in the lobby, with the place made available again.

This would also involve a "code change" in the lobby mechanics, to ensure that if a player refuses to start a game, they cannot cannot rejoin the same game later on (otherwise a table could get stuck in an infinite loop).

I think that works, but the issue is that there seems to be hundreds of these people. I just don't know when the end of the cycle of having to down-thumb these people actually is. I still do it. And yet, there is a constant stream of people who do this. I don't think it's necessarily even their fault... there is something in the UX that is badly broken if they are not able to *easily* set their options so they don't match my games.

Actually, yes, that would be great. Even if all they did was make it so that if a person cancels starting my game, they are not matched with me for, say, 24 hours, that would be helpful. Although an even *easier* solution would be to disallow that person from joining any games for one minute. Or even 30 seconds. Then they would maybe take 10 seconds to go look at their own settings.

Yeah, this would be an improvement.

Also, repeating what I said earlier, I do think this is sometimes an honest mistake in game configuration, but it is still a mistake, and an irritant to others (why I said I put a note apologizing when I accidentally do this every couple months). So maybe a small reputation penalty is appropriate, one which is doubled (or more) if it is repeated within a small time span -- this is more indicative of intentional behavior, which I think is the same theory behind doubling the abandoned game policy to -20 rep penalty if it was done recently.

But this should be a generic problem for ALL games, not just TTR, so the discussion should be continued elsewhere. So if anyone wants to take up a change (I personally don't care that much), move the discussion to the appropriate place or no one from BGA will see this.

I don't really have that experience, and I also play 4 player mega game. Is your reputation at 100%? I will often cancel if I see a player under around 80%.

Then set your restrictions to >75% or >85%, and you'll save yourself (and others) a lot of cancelling.

I have them at >75% (I don't see an option for 85%), but sometimes if it takes a little time to find players it puts me in another players game who doesn't have that restriction.

ah the step back that is the new game launch screen. Use the old lobby "play now" from the header bar and enter games that way and you can get the >85% option back when you create a manual table. auto fill is limited to 75% though. https://boardgamearena.com/lobby

Where's this "red thumb"? I also have had the same person keep joining and cancelling my games with no obvious way to kick

ahminus wrote: 22 January 2024, 03:50 Is there some mechanism to prevent players from repeatedly joining your game and cancelling start? I mean, other than removing them from your player list by putting them in your settings not to play with them?

It seems there are hundreds of these people out there, and I wonder how long it would take me to add all of them individually.

I only play 4 player Mega games, I bought Premium. I maybe get a successful game start about 1 in 15 goes. Someone cancels, almost immediately, *every time*. Many people do it repeatedly. It's beyond frustrating, and I will dump Premium if there isn't a way to resolve this.
Unfortunately this is a problem hugely perpetuated by the design of BGA lobbies in the last 12 months. With the new "play now" system when you click search, bga will attempt to integrate you into the first lobby it can that matches your settings. Last time I checked player count isn't one the settings you can alter. So if a non premium member only wants to play 2 player games and keeps getting matched into a 4 player game then they are going to keep quitting and vice versa. Also there are many out there who will refuse to play 3 or 5 player games and quit if they get grouped into such a lobby.
