Chess points

Post by quoslowtrain »

On deciding whether to play a game of chess, it used to provide the ranking points for both myself and my opponent. Now it doesn't, why?

On completing a game of chess, it used to show the number of points gained or lost, for both myself and my opponent. Now it doesn't, why?

For cooperative games such as Hanabi, The Crew, or Just One, competition is already disabled. However, some players were too focused on the ELO, which led to unnecessary competitiveness in an environment which should instead incentivize cooperation.
For such games, we decided to hide the ELO value of each player and only display their current rank, from Beginner to Master.
This rank is based on existing win / loss games from the underlying ELO system. This way, you will not lose your rank with this change. For some games where chapters or scenarios are played, the more successful chapter will get you to the next rank faster, but you will not know how far from the next rank you could be at a given time.
This also applies to games where competition is disabled such as Chess.

See this post by site admin Een for an explanation of why chess is not available for ranked/competitive play on BGA.
NB: competitive modes are disabled due to helper software being easily accessible online for this game; our adaptation should be considered appropriate for initiation and casual play, not for competition.
This change long preceded the recent adjustment to ELO calculations/visibility in December 2023.

I don't play competitively, never have, just for fun. I did like to see how my points went up or down though after a friendly match. Shame it's not now available for friendly games and I still don't see the logic behind it but no matter.

"Friendly" is what before was called "training", nothing has changed there but the name. You can still play with friends with elo (it's up to you to decide how "competitive" you want to be), or in normal games with strangers. What changed many months ago is that you can only play with no time limit in friendly mode (and therefore no elo), if that's what you mean.
