game result cancellation

Post by vorgamer »

I was playing in game #6601549 (Tzolk'in) and at the very end of the last round a player withdrew. This caused the game result to be cancelled. This doesn't strike me as a fair was to handle such situations since a losing player can proven a loss (or an opponent's victory) from being registered just by quitting.

Having "This player quits a significant amount of the time" displayed when they are at a table isn't a penalty? The additional 10 points they lose for being the first to quit a game isn't a penalty? (http://en.doc.boardgamearena.com/Rating) Because if they quit just to prevent a loss, those happen, and everyone, not just BGA members can see quit statistics. Probably along with red thumbs from the people they did it to. Now, if only there were some way to report individual players to BGA staff for violating the first item mentioned in the FAQ as to what is forbidden on BGA... Oh, wait, it's right there under the icons to evaluate them.

Is it just not "fair" because you didn't get credit for a win? Is your ranking so much more important than any fun you had playing up until the last round? Penalties exist. If you feel like you are entitled to a win (and ELO ranking) because your opponent quit, be careful when you join your next untimed game: someone may be expecting a win just by waiting until you get frustrated and leave.

Some high rated players quit games when losing. Yes, they get red thumbs, but not lose rating. Why??? :(

In higlhly elo volatile games like saboteur (which is another matter) where you can gain and lose 150 points in 1 game this is a very exploitable way to limit the loss to 50 even though I havent encountered it that often. My suggestion is to place the leavers/expelled players in last place in games where it is possible (I think most of the games) and let the remaining players finish the game and counting the end result towards wins/elo.
