After looking at the post from 2021 that was linked, I realised I had made a mistake in that thread and have corrected it. The post had been about a bug causing private chat messages to be marked, and the assurance you can talk about other legal gaming platforms privately was guaranteed by sourisdudesert. However, publicly we request that you refrain from mentioning these by name or posting links, as is clearly stated in our FAQ:

"And finally, do not use Board Game Arena communication resources to advertise other gaming websites. If you want to talk about your experience elsewhere, please just say something like 'on another gaming website'."

Hey mod, you're directly contradicting another mod (my emphasis in bold): https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewto ... 419#p96419

I don't see anything in the quote saying it would be true in the present ...
Or true forever. The policy may have changed in the over two years since it was posted. That said, I find it kind of funny how chess sites that in only the most hypertechnical sense of the word "compete" with BGA are banned. But I suppose if they allow references to any sites, then it creates a gray area to refer to sites that are actually competing.
There are a number of funny things in fairness. Moderating a forum with one post a day or two is one of those.

It amazes me how many people who do not even pay to play on BGA nevertheless complain bitterly about it.

A group of people have created a service by which you can play hundreds of board games against thousands of people worldwide virtually 24/7/365, they provide you that service at no charge .... and yet people still complain.

Pretty sad state of affairs to me.

I have been a Premium subscriber on BGA for almost four years now and I find it one of the best value for money things I ever buy. And that's paying for it, never mind having it for free.

Free with paying membership and membership benefits is not free...is just another way of attracting people and get them to subscribe. I am sure you have seen this implemented in other areas as well or like with the apps on your phone. So let's not pretend there is not a business with people making profit on BGA

I'm not pretending BGA isn't a business - I'm just from a different era, and for most of my life if you wanted something you paid for it.

Now people seem to look at things that are free at the point of use (like news websites, social media websites, and yes BGA if you aren't Premium) and complain bitterly about them. As someone who lived through the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s etc I just find that very odd.

Equally the approach I took both back then and now is pretty much the same - if I like something, I use it, and if I don't like it I don't use it.

Rather than these people who say "BGA has dice that are fixed, and moderators that don't care, and a terrible UI.....oh but wait a minute it still allows me to play games for free so I am going to quietly play 5,000 games without having to pay whilst also spouting out about how bad it is".

The truth is, if you're getting BGA for free you're getting a very good deal. If you pay you also are - and at that point you are a customer, and may find BGA listen to you more as well...

They don't listen at all, doesn't matter if you pay... Unless you don't need to be moderated, in that case they do 😂

Thanks for showing up and clairyfying.

It is still a sad policy as it harms discussion, but I am sure it makes moderation easier.

Is there an area of the forum for advertising games?

Say I want to play game x but it takes forever to find a table is there somewhere users can browse that's actual people talking rather than a massive catalogue of games? Might be an idea for people to advertise the games they are interested in, try and sell why they thing they are worth learning and offer to teach even.

I'd guess you're supposed to use the game specific forums to look for tables of that particular game.

I think you're probably right but it doesn't seem like this would expand the playing pool for lesser promoted games
