Increase abandon game time limit/Holidays mode

Post by Scarbrow »

This just happened to me.

I was playing a long game of turn-based Tzolk'in (1 move/day) with my friends. We were a month into the game and still in the middle of it, because we're on different time zones across the world and can't usually move more than that.

One of my friends had to make a work travel that would take him far from home with no possibility of an internet connection. We agreed to let him time-out and wait for him to come back, since he had a lot of accumulated time to think (over 45 days). We were, of course, mortified when we discovered that, 9 days into the wait period, the game was marked as "abandoned". Why show 45 days to think if the game is going to be canceled anyway? If we had wanted to expel him, we would have done so.

My suggestion is to add a way to indicate "I'm going to be away for an extended amount of time" (like you're able to Quit the game) and let the other players say if they're OK with that (so the game does not get abandoned until the - ideally configurable - holiday period) or if they want to quit without penalties (and apply the usual penalties to the quitting player). It's no use to have a turn-based mode for the longer games that can span a couple of months or more, if you can't be away from the site more than a few days at a time in the best of cases.

Ideally, this holiday mode would apply to games rather than players (ensuring everybody concerned in the games approve) and would remove the Timeout/Quitting penalty for the missing player through the approved period.

Alternatively, make it so the game is not abandoned while the player in "timeout" still has "time to think", or at least allow a longer period (30 days minimum) before marking games as abandoned

Oh, is that what happens?

I have had some games, too, where one player said he would be gone for holidays, we all agreed to wait. Then after some time there was an abandoned message, i kinda figured there must have been a vote to abandon and I just didnt see it as I didnt check back.

So, I completely agree with you, the game shouldnt just be abandoned like that. Your suggestion makes sense I think, sounds like a good way to implement holidays and other longer periods of absence.

So: +1

There's possibly a reason BGA can't keep alot of turn-base games floatin' about inactive, but yeah, if the players can vote to give a player a holiday mode that is a good feature to have..

I'm not getting why the game got abandoned before a player's think time ran out.

But that aside, as long as all players agree to a vacation/holiday time, I think this is a fine option. I wouldn't want to force that on someone who is not wanting to do it, but as long as everyone agrees on x number of days for someone to be away, I see nothing wrong with this. After all, it's the other players who are affected by it.
