"Meatiest" turns of the turn-based games?

Hey there BGA forum, query from a total newbie here.

I adore turn-based games, my crew tends to play a lot of Civ Through the Ages. We've tried some others, but none seem to have the big weighty meaty turns. You know what I mean? Since we play about a turn a day, it's nice if each turn has a lot of action. Would any of you have recommendations for a new game for us to learn? We tried Castles of Burgundy, a great game in person, but felt the turn-based wasn't oomphy enough. I'd be willing to try anything! Thanks kindly for your advice, this site is tremendous.

Anyway, i don't know any meaty-in-a-turn games other than TTA.. Most of the games i played makes one/two move/s a turn.

You could try Tzolk'in although the meatier turns are toward the end of the game (and only if you did a good job earlier in the game ).

Something that can help this problem is playing at least several games at once. Coming on and taking one turn of one game really isn't doing much of anything, and then feels like a huge let-down cause you're sitting there going "Well, now what?" When you have other turns to take (on different games) then you get to continue doing something. It's not quite the same as continuing to play the same game live until you're finished, but at least it takes some time and allows you to play for a bit of time.

I would start with the games here in the "For Core Gamers" group, particularly In the Year of the Dragon and Troyes. Amyitis, Gear & Piston, and Tourney may fall into that category as well (I have only scanned the rules of these).

You won't find many games that approach the layered complexity of Through the Ages, though there are a number that require some fairly serious planning. Someone mentioned Tzolk'in; Caylus is rather similar with short turns leading a very tight endgame.

If you are looking at other sites, you might check out Agricola (boiteajeux.net) or At the Gates of Loyang (yucata.de). Yucata just added Russian Railroads which may also fit (I have not played it yet).
