Casting an ongoing spell using another spell

Post by HAL 9OOO »

Hey Wizards,

I would like a clarification about the definition of casting a spell, especially regarding ongoing spells.

Let's take an example:
If I spend 1 mana from my hand to cast False Face and then cast Blood Lust, the latter will deal 3 damages (1+2 because I casted False Face beforehand).

But if I put the mana on False Face using another spell (like Fracture to move the mana for example) and then cast Blood Lust what will happen? Is False Face considered as cast as it will have an effect later in the game or is it considered as cast only if the mana came from my hand ?

If someone has been in this situation, I would appreciate it if you could let me know the outcome.

Doesn't the rulebook define casting a spell as placing the mana on the spell listed on its cost to play it? I don't see why moving mana on it through other means would do the trick.

@Ceaseless is correct. "Casting a spell" is fairly explicitly defined in the rule book as:
"Using mana in their hand, players may cast any of their spells that have no mana placed on them, one at a time."

Worth noting, spells can activate in different ways:

"Not all spell effects happen at the moment a spell is cast. The symbol in the top left of each spell indicates its method of activation as either instant, delayed or ongoing."

In the case Fracture, it is activating False Face, but it has not been cast.
