don't understand the answer

Post by alterdino »

Hi
I have the card 11 (B<Y B=Y B>Y) and the card 15 (B>y,P Y>BP P>YB).
In my mind B can't be equal to Y because then 15 will be irrelevant (the only answer will be P>YB)
But the correct answer was 22x
Why I am wrong ?

B=Y doesn’t imply that card 15 is irrelevant because card 15 still tells you that there is a color with the highest number. Without card 15, solutions like 222 & 221 would be valid.

Card 15 does not only tell you that purple has the highest number. It also forces the fact that the solution must have a highest number.

Sorry, don't get it. How do you deduct with the 15 that P is the highest ?

Thanks,

Thanks,
The rule you are probably missing is that each verifier must be required to find the answer... so no verifier can be redundant.

If card 15 said "Blue is largest" or "Yellow is largest" then you would already know what the answer to card 11 would be. You wouldn't need card 11 to be there at all, because it would give you no new information. This is forbidden in a valid puzzle, therefore you know that those two options are impossible. This leaves "Purple is largest" as the only valid option, so you automatically know that's the answer to card 15 in this puzzle without having to test it.
