Why do games I create expire after a day?

Post by waxeater »

I'm trying to create turn based games restricted to a private group.

I am facing several problems:

1) There is no way to "invite" them so they get notified when the game is created. I have to notify them out of band with links to the game.
2) The game expires after 24 hours, so I have to keep re-creating the game and re-notifying them of the game if they don't join in that time period or I don't get around to starting it.

The is a major bummer and is a deficiency compared to other turn based sites.

I have happy to donate money to BGA, and I am a current donor, but this is making me sad.

You can restrict table access. I don't know if you're talking about an official group on here, in which case under "restrict table access" there is a drop-down menu that has your groups listed and you just pick it.

Or, if you have them listed as friends, and they are the only friends you have (not meaning that how it sounds of course :D ), then you can also restrict to just friends.

Or, if these are just random people on here, there's a place where you can specific "leave a place for" and put their names. That's down a bit further, under the spaces for the players and takes a bit longer to put in.

You may want to fill this part out first in case the thing goes live before you have a chance to finish - at least that way no one else can accidentally take it before you've set everything how you want.

If this is always the same group of people, you can either make a private group for them, or make sure they're the only ones in your friends list, which would make this process easier.

Sorry, I may have misinterpreted there. When you said there was no way to "invite" them, this was what I was thinking - yes you can restrict it to them.

But I guess you were referring to the fact that you have to contact them. Yes, you do. Even if the site automatically sent an invite to them, they would still have to be contacted. There simply isn't any way to notify them other than to notify them.

So I guess the real issue is them taking the invite inside of 24 hours. Do they know you're trying to create the game? If so, I guess I'm kind of not sure why it would take so long for them to hop on and just accept the invite real quick. I realize not everyone has immediate and constant access to email/text (I'd be one of them), but if they know you're trying to do this, they could certainly make a point to check.

(Although I agree that for the turn-based, which is what I assume you mean, that more than 24 hours would be reasonable. There are also games that just don't pick up enough players that quickly.)
