"Defender" scoring -- am I wrong or is the implementation wrong?

Post by Speusippus »

"Defender" gives points according to how much of the "wall" track you have filled in. But in BGA's implementation, the score is instead associated with how much of the "fort" track you have filled in instead, despite there also being a track titled "wall" on the board, which would seem to be what is referenced by the defender card.

Before I report this as a bug I want to be sure. Is it possible I'm misunderstanding the rule?

Defender scores you one point for each granary section you completely fill in. This includes the Mining & Foresting, Wall Guard, Cippi, Wall, and Fort.

I've boxed in each section in this image. Checking an entire section scores you one point with the Defender Path. The sections are also separated by a light line inbetween them.

I agree the wording is confusing even if it makes sense on paper. :)

With respect, that is definitely not right.

Here's Defender:

* "Scores 1, 2, or 3 VP for having 1, 2, or 3 completed Wall sections. This means filling all the boxes
in each of the 3 sections (within the Small, Medium and Large Granaries)"

And here's Vanguard:

* "Scores 1, 2, or 3 VP for having 1, 2, or 3 completed Wall Guard sections. This means filling all
the boxes in each of the 3 sections (within the Small, Medium and Large Granaries)"

Notice that these are identical with only one difference -- one says "wall" and one says "wall guard." These two clearly refer to the two tracks, one titled "wall" and the other "wall guard". If Defender meant you have to fill in ALL the boxes on a third of the map and not just the "wall" boxes, then Vanguard would have to mean the same thing by the same logic, but obviously they can't both mean the same thing. The wall/wall guard distinction is the key to understanding their meaning.

In any case, that argument aside, what you describe is _definitely_ not how it's workin in the implementation, for example here https://boardgamearena.com/11/hadriansw ... =480634832

It scores a point on Defender simply for having a third of the "fort" track filled in. But it should be scoring a point for having a third of the "wall" track filled in, per the wording on the card.

I went to report the bug and see there's already a bug report, many months old--and an older one, which the dev said was "fixed" though it was not. This is unfortunate!

Ahhh that makes a lot of sense! Sorry for the misinterpretation when reading the rules!

That is a shame though, hopefully it will get a proper fix when the dev has a moment to look it over again.

The wording is really confusing, I am surprised if anybody understands it on a first read. I really did have to see both cards together to finally be confident I knew what either was supposed to mean!

Really...? I never knew that and just assumed it was coded correctly. Can anyone else confirm?

Just to clarify, are you asking for verification that the Defender card is supposed to score the wall track, or are you asking for verification that the implementation is scoring the fort track for Defender?

It's definitely *supposed* to score wall sections. You are certain it's coded wrong and scoring something else?

Yeah I agree its confusing lol. Reading comprehention is definetly a valued skill when it comes to board games!

Speusippus do you happen to have the table number so they can see what it looks like in game? That'll probably be enough to confirm it.
