This is wrong then. You should always see what someone discards. This is a crucial part of strategy.
Says who?
Someone who has played in tournaments for over 10 years (and won). This is how it is done on all other online platforms. And just general common sense. In real life games you also inevitably see what and how many is discarded.
Your tournament experience doesn't matter for much here, unfortunately. The publisher of the game prefers a hidden discard but understands that IRL games can benefit from having the discard be face-up to differentiate it. You still get to know how many cards were discarded from the game log.

There is a certain level of information that can be attained through knowing what players have discarded (such as an opponent discarding sun bear if they never got the partnership required to play it) or you have noticed a certain amount of X type of animals being discarded to give you information on how good your chances are of drawing another of similar type (card counting in a sense).

It does go back to the original problem that it can make the game too lengthy or fiddly.

You've played in tournaments for over 10 years in a game that is out for like, 2 years?

Other games do not mater. There are games with both public and hidden discards.

In other games like Catan. But mostly it's just board gaming etiquette thing that you declare what you discard to other players. And discard piles in all other games work similarly. It doesn't make sense for this game to have it be any different. This game also has features that allow you to go through the discard pile so you can sometimes see what is in there. So I'd say that keeping the discard pile hidden is just a meaningless decision.

The game developer also made the change lately so that you can't end the game with negative points... by adding 100 points to everyone's score. Which is also a kind of stupid decision. So I don't really have much confidence in his decision of having slightly different elemental gameplay mechanics.

Why are we discussing this, really?
I dont care if all the other games does it, or if you consider that being a stupid decision, the fact is that it's how the designer and publisher want this game to be played, and as a consequence this will also be the only way to play it on BGA.

They do not. In Terraforming Mars, for example, you always discard facedown. You never show them or declare them. It's even part of the strategy, like drafting certain cards and immediately discarding so your opponent doesnt get them and doesn't know they are not in the deck anymore.

Every game is different.

It does not, it has scavanging that has you shuffle first - one of the reasons is so you dont have to track discard. Expansion adds Horse Whisperer - but that only lets one player look at the discard at one time.

I'm back and kind of reviving this post but not to know about seeing discarded cards, but instead to see *how many* cards have been discarded. Horse Whisperer is the reason for this, but essentially I can't remember if there was a petting zoo animal discarded, but also I only know that I'm about half way through the game and don't know roughly how many cards are in there. I'd feel good about searching 30-40+ cards, but not as good about searching 10-15 or fewer. Wish I had a count or something like that.

I'd take just a number somewhere. If it exists, I haven't found it.

I Havent played in tournaments for over 10 years and won, but in my layman opinion a face up discard would be a horrible Idea. I also wouldnt call it ”crucial” for strategy

the main problem with reviving an old thread like this for a new/different question is that a lot of people wont even get to your comment before replying to the old topic. Not everyone checks the dates. and then your question is buried in the middle.

hopefully, me quoting you garners some attention for it, lol
