I believe they start at 75%, but your point still stands. You get given the benefit of the doubt when you're new, but having good karma is not a reason not to kick. Every player who plays too slowly has to start doing it somewhere, and people have the right to assign penalties as they see fit (within what the system allows - ie. if you're over time, your opponent can choose to penalise you, and is not in the wrong for doing so).
ganui wrote: 27 February 2024, 03:57 i dont agree sorry... for certain games (liek ark nova) there are double or triple moves at times that would end up taking more than the time limit you have...
This has been discussed before and there is a suggestion (bug report) somewhere specifically for Ark Nova requesting that more time be given in these situations, which you can go vote for. However, the BGA system as it currently stands means this is not a simple thing to do and would need some changes in the framework.

That said, in your game of Ark Nova, it didn't look like it was the double move that caused the issue (although you were playing two animals), but rather the fact that you didn't start the actions of your turn until you were down to about 20 seconds of positive time (after starting the turn with 2:45 on the clock). Maybe you were thinking about your move, but that's part of the game to make your move and your decisions within the given time. Else, choose a slower speed.

And while I say that, I personally don't usually choose to eject a player who is actively playing as I'd rather play a game than not, and I do find it somewhat annoying when others do (in a multi-player game that I am part of). That said, players are within their rights to do so, as has been stated. The rules are what the rules are. If no one can ever be booted, that would cause problems. Auto-booting means people like me who'd rather play than not would be more frustrated. To be honest, I don't see there's a way they could change ejection settings to be "fairer". As for time limits, well, there's a decent range of them, so if you want more time per turn you can choose that too. If you want more time options, I believe there's suggestions in for those as well, which can be voted for (though I think the most popular of these is for a faster turn speed than fast), or you could raise one yourself. Apart from that, you can't do much else other than choose your time limits to suit your play.

I suggested elsewhere (or maybe in this thread, earlier) that the choice to eject should be opt-out rather than opt-in. Expulsion should be automatic, but with a 20-second (maybe) timer, during which all other players can choose not to expel (for now): if any other player doesn't do it in time, the slow player is expelled automatically, and no one else but the slow player is to blame.

Fair enough, but I'd wonder how that would work for turn-based - I mean, if it's not your turn, you're probably not looking at the game anyway.

I think it would also lead to some being booted due to the frustration. Like you might save a player from ejection a few times, but if they keep going over, even only a little, you might say, eh, forget it, I'm not saving you anymore. I could see myself doing that, even though right now, I'm inclined to ignore the skip button unless they're gone for a while (probably 5 min or more over time in a RT game). I mean, perhaps that's ok, but that would be my frustration with the interface constantly prompting me to save the over time player, rather than being really frustrated with the player.

if u go over a couple of seconds, the following turn you only have 20-30sec for the full turn... (and again, in ark nova often its not enough to complete a complex turn or multiple ones and realise half way through there was a better strategy or move u can make)
the kicking players (which i have done it a few times, but always wait at least 2-3 min OVER the limit in case there was a disconnection or some technical issue and usually make sure others wait too if it is a multiplayer). When u can see a player is actively playing but going over 10-20 sec for a couple of turns in a row, u dont kick them, u can ask them if there are still there and ask them to hurry up but dont kick on first chance u have just cause u can... cmon, what world are we living in?

In that case the timer should just be 10-20 seconds longer. Why have a turn time of 50s if it's unacceptable to kick until -20s? Make the timer 70s and then you can kick at 0. Same thing.

You can do this yourself by playing at Normal speed instead of Fast, or Slow instead of Normal.

The best fix would be to make expulsion automatic across the board but allow an option in the game setup to use the current system. Automatic expulsion solves most of the problems.

Even just the option for automatic expulsion when setting up the table would solve a lot of problems. Let people know before they join the table that if they run out of time they will be removed.

I agree!! I just ended a second game where another player expelled me in the very last couple seconds of the entire game, and coincidentally, they were losing and I was winning. And then I looked at the total times and they were either overall slower in the game or about the same as me. It's infuriating. I think either ALL players should agree to expel the lagging player, or maybe there's a better solution. Also, I have been a member for about 10 years now and I play a ton, but interestingly, I've noticed both times that the player doing this was pretty new. It seems like an etiquette violation.

And I might add - when I got expelled, in ARK Nova, TWICE in the last 3 games - I was at -20 seconds and a mere 2 seconds away from finishing my turn, literally on the very last click of my turn when BOOM I get expelled - the other player hit EXPEL the absolute first second they were permitted to do so. It was clearly an avoiding-a-loss move. It feels like terrible sportsmanship.

Here's the neat part. You think you were winning, but you were not the moment you ran out of time, even if you think you were. In timed games on BGA (or anywhere really), going over time is a lose condition. BGA is just weird coz it is up to other players to enforce it and claim the win instead of automatically doing it.

And for the other comment about unsportsmanlike behavior, it is more unsportsmanlike to break the agreed rules of the table (the turn timer, in this case) and expect others to put up with it, and then complain when they don't.
