Conceding a 1v1 game

Hello,

I played a lot of altered beta recently.
Today in a game, a player told me gg because there was absolutely no chance for him to turn the situation back, but instead of conceding he skipped the last turns. I asked him why he didn't simply concede and he told me it is penalized in BGA.

It didn't even occur to me that it could be penalized in such a game. I've played a lot of 1v1 competitive card games and it's usually considered rude to drag out a game when you have absolutely no hope of coming back. If you have a veeeryy slim chance ? Sure keep on playing.

I agree in classical boardgames especially at higher player counts, I would consider conceding to be rude. People expect to be able to get the full experience. But in 1v1 card games or in games like chess or go, beating the other people IS the full experience.

I already conceded 3 or 4 Altered games that were absoluterly lost and didn't get a penalty, so maybe the distinction is already implemented ? I did not find the information.

The player may have been confused. There is no penalty conceding a 1v1 game.

There IS a penalty if someone outright quits the game, but they are warned when they try to do so.

He is wrong, and is perhaps confused about the difference between the "Concede the game" button and the "Quit this game" button. The former is perfectly acceptable (to BGA; I don't want to restart the holy war about the ethics of conceding a game) and the latter gives you a penalty. A question for that person: if they were both penalized, why would there be two buttons?

Ed.: GT posted while I was checking to make sure I had the names of the buttons correct, and to do so I had to start and finish a game. But you get the idea.

This may be different for Beta, but at least normally, when

the Progression is too low ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ (I forget if this is ​ ​ ​ < 50% ​ ​ ​ or ​ ​ ​ <= 50% ​ )
or
the game is in a tournament

, ​ the Concede button doesn't work:


In such cases, the options are rushing through and Quitting.



(The tournament part is because

some games have scores beyond lose/draw/win
and
some tournament formats use those scores as a tiebreaker

and BGA

doesn't allow games to indicate that they have no such scores
and
doesn't detect when the tournament format wouldn't use such scores

Some games are buggy or poorly coded, and the progression stays below 50% too long (sometimes even stuck at 0% for the whole game), making it impossible to concede.

I thought I was conceding a game this evening but I didn't read it properly and I actually quit with a penalty.

How do I concede should I need to in the future?

If English is set as your preference, one button will say "Concede the game" and the other will say "Quit this game." I don't know how it's worded in other languages.

Note that you cannot concede a 3+ player game. You also cannot concede a game that has not reached 50% progression (usually shown in the upper left of the game screen). As noted above, there are some games that have not implemented a calculation for progression, in which case you won't be able to concede those games.

That's another no-brainer improvement BGA could make - if you quit a game that you could have conceded, you'd concede instead...
