#20 - Solo Challenge [April 2024] ENDED

Post by montybojangles »

Welcome to the monthly solo challenge. For April it's to play the Taklons versus the automa of the month, the Hadsch Hallas (select the 'Automa of the month' button), on the Random map. Check that the seed in the automa score panel is 17119728. It is important that you read the Rules section for more details, especially if the seed is not 17119728.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, this challenge is for you. The goal is simple: have fun and get a high score in solo mode. Thanks to the BGA set-up, you can easily compare your score, watch replays of games and learn different ways of playing a faction. (There's more guidance on how to view replays at/near the end of the May 2023 challenge.) Play serenely at your leisure: there is no timer pressure!

It's well done again to kespie for getting March's high score and sincere thanks to everyone who tried the challenge.

There's elite rank for the top 5 players and cadet rank for everyone else.

1st step: Create a new table. Select Training or Friendly mode and Random map. Choose 1 player/Solo and click on Start game. Select the red box Automa of the month (Hadsch Hallas).
2nd step: Select the difficulty you think you can handle.
3rd step: Select the faction Taklons. Check that the seed is 17119728 (in the player score panel). If it isn't, start again using the alternative starting method (below).
4th step: Play the game. Post your score(s), mentioning the chosen difficulty (see the format below).

Alternative starting method: Start the game with Random map selected >> Choose the Hadsch Hallas faction card (as you would for a normal game) >> Set the custom seed (17119728 for this challenge), which is next to the heading 'Choose Automa Difficulty Level', and Select the Automa difficulty >> Choose Taklons.

Players usually insert the link of their game (you can find it on your profile – tab (x) games played) and mention which openings, tech tracks and other actions have been crucial for them (e.g. RL+2M. Economy, aiming for advanced tech tile on AI).

Ideally, use this format: YourNickname Score vs AutomaLevel Score – LinkOfTheGame – Techs focus – YourComment (e.g.: Marcus Aurelius 222 vs Ultoma 165 – www.boardgamearena.com/game=12345 – focus on Science and Terraforming until mid-game, with aim of taking advanced tile on Terraforming).

And don't forget to have fun!

Here's my attempt:

montybojangles 165 vs Automa 156 - https://boardgamearena.com/7/gaiaprojec ... =494835181 - Academy (left) opening, mainly advanced on economy and terraforming. Misplaced the lost planet otherwise could have won the 'planets in federations' endgame scoring.

Bad, bad, bad. I haven't played Taklons for ages, maybe just twice in my life, but still... I know about several mistakes I made.

Me 141 vs. Ultoma 180. (I always play against Automa lvl. 4/5.)

PI in R3, both academies in R6.

3 feds (4 tokens), 32 VP from tracks. Economy track was a priority.

Man, this was harder than I thought it should
I like Taklons and play them way too often but still so much room for improvement.
First somewhat reasonable try
danuer13 199 VS Automächtig 161
https://boardgamearena.com/11/gaiaproje ... =494860497
AC + mine on a gaia opening, science 3.
PI on round 3, 2 feds + fed token on round 4, advanced tech from terra on round 5, 52 VP from science overall.
Could have done better with gaia, will try next time

upd. a better try
danuer13 218 vs Ultoma 165
https://boardgamearena.com/11/gaiaproje ... =494860497
The same as above but better with gaia + a bit better timing

KassHino 151 vs Automatically 146 – https://boardgamearena.com/11/gaiaproje ... =495157076 – focus on navigation and switch to Gaia forming R3 – Achieved 3 federations and two advanced tech tiles, the one from Nav and the one in Gaia track, got to last level in Gaia track

Hi. It's an interesting game - but I'm sorry to say you've done it on the Fixed map, when it should be on the Random map. Good luck on your next try.

I'm glad it's a 'challenge' :D .

Edited. Nice games. The relatively early PI does help with tokens for forming feds. Btw, you added the same link for both games, but I've found and put the Ultoma one in the score lists.

This is not the easiest HH game to play against. I like it that you tried the 2RL opening. I think it has promise, perhaps with an Academy in R3.

Score lists updated.

2nd (and my final) try was much better!

Me 189 vs. Ultoma 178.

Academy R1, PI R3.

Eco > Nav > Tera > AI. 36 VP from tracks, 39 VP from tech tiles (2 advanced ones).

3 feds with 4 tokens.

I am happy with this result so I stop (and because I am sick and my brain hurts after playing GP). :D

Thank you for the challenge! I never play against the AI, but I'm on vacation with my son, so it's perfect when i'm interrupted often to play turn by turn against AI.

I lost against Alptrauma 209 vs 233. https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=496169956

opened AC + 2M Sci3 to grap the charge 4 tech
turn 2 lab to Eco3
turn 3 icq AC to Sci 4 and Eco 4
Turn 4 grab Adv tech mine+3 and std tech mine gaia +3, then spam mine and gaiaform turn 4 and 5
Not a single icq action which seems bad, I think if i dont go Terra 5 turn 6 but instead AI 4 and icq actions it should be better. It is also achievable to do 4 feds by optimizing more i guess.

Thanks again !

Upd. 2nd try. 221 vs Ultoma 172, same as above but PI in turn 3, 4 feds and a few icq actions. https://boardgamearena.com/5/gaiaprojec ... =496465763.

ChrisStegner 135 vs Automa Score 155– https://boardgamearena.com/10/gaiaproje ... =496641655 – Techs Navigation

My first try at this kind of challenge.
I did poorly, but is was a lot of fun.
I have never tried vs the Automa and didn't know what to expect.

Thanks!!
