Latest update

Post by crispy116 »

The latest update to Backgammon has made the game almost unplayable - it is now so slow to do everything, it has gone from being a quick 5 min game that was fun to fill some time, to an onerous slog of slow movement and button clicks everywhere.

The UX is terrible - and none of the 'options' in the settings that look like they might change this can be pressed, they are all greyed out.

This is no longer fun to play

Agree, it's terrible...It must be a bug, like the first version when they tried to develop Backgammon came back online...
The previous version was fast, good looking and worked pretty well.

I will wait for the next update because this version is unplayable and not good looking.

I agree as well:
- to have to confirm every move takes a lot of time
- to either concede a point, gammon or backgammon: what does that mean?
- why, at the end of the game if you only have 1 'token' left can you not just finish and confirm? I didn´t know what to do.
- the dices are not easy to see. I am fortunately not color blind, but I think for some it is really bad to see.
- why if you throw a double it shows 4 dices? Everyone knows or learns really quickly how the real game/double works.
- if the other throws the dice and isn´t able to move, you can hardly see what he threw.
It is really aweful to play.

I came to the forums to find this exact post. I fully agree that it's taken all enjoyment out of the game. The only positive I guess it that I can take a break from complaining about the ridiculous dice rolls.

To be a bit more constructive with the feedback:
- The interface is extremely low quality. I play at times on a 27" monitor and it makes 1998 Yahoo! Games look high quality. It is difficult to visually picture your moves (+1 for slowness).
- It's slow
- Did we need extra button clicks just to have the UNDO option as a feature? The confirm button each time is difficult to remember (+1 for slowness)
- The dice are extremely fuzzy, and I am colourblind, which further adds to the challenges of this horrible colour scheme. (EDIT - Changing the board theme to classic is a huge help to the visuals)

Very disappointing update. Hopefully you have an UNDO option that you can confirm.

Like playing in quicksand. Nice they added a doubling cube finally. But at what cost? Been playing with people who don't then know what it is. Guess they learned the game on BGA.

Undo and confirm are good options, finally you can undo a misclick.
But the game is slower, so those options should be optional. Who wants or needs them (big fingers on little screen, shaking device when traveling, cats, children or other beings touching the device), would use them, who doesn't want them should be able to disable those options for good.

New look is terrible! Why, when changing options, you also changed something that was really OK?

What a horrible thing to wake up to...

- I miss the sound effects from every time you make a move. It's actually less clear now if the move has registered.

- I understand the purpose of the "Undo/Confirm," but it's just an extra step and then watching the animation after is annoying.

- No more score keeping on the sidebar? It used to keep track of how many spaces you had remaining, and how many guys you'd beared off.

- I miss when the spaces you could move to lit up. Those were nice.

- It's just plain ugly. Really does look like a computer game I'd play in the 90s. Why "fix" something that wasn't broken?

To address each of your concerns:

Sounds - no idea on this one.

Undo/Confirm - Undo was WIDELY requested, and you can't really have an undo with a confirm.

Sidebar/beared off pieces - I'm seeing this just fine. Maybe your zoom level is off? I see pips remaining at top in player card area where they always were, and beared off pieces are just to the right of the board.

Lit up spaces - this is an option (I think called "move hint"), so you can still play with it.

Look - I like the current look, now sure what the issue is here. There are "layout changes" coming, not sure if that will change the look at all.

Only real issue I've had is lag communicating with the server. Real time fast games are nearly impossible to stay in the positive with the lag. Once that gets resolved, though, I love the update, and everything is working great for me.

I made an edit to my post, but if you change the Theme to Classic, it really helps the visuals. The Arabian theme is just awful.
