Renegade sucks

Post by darknesscatcher_6 »

Playing as renegade in this game is essentially a guaranteed loss, either one of the outlaws or the vice will pick you off first, or you end up against the vice and sheriff, and somehow the sheriff knows that it's you. I have only won once as renegade, and due to pure luck. What can be done about this? No matter what you do, somebody will finish you off before you even have a chance to go against the sheriff. I wish I could quit whenever I get this role. Why is it like this and how to make the game more balanced?

You can contact the publisher and try to get bang duel on bga which is only 2p. I may do this 1 day when I’m not too lazy :)

What you can do here is switch to 4p games which is the most even statistically for the renegade role. Obviously still a tough task but nowhere near as bad as the other player counts. I feel the same way as you which is why I switched to 4p.

Guaranteed loss is a misconception. I played as Renegade in 6 player arena mode 179 times, won 40 times. Win rate 22.35%. Of course, if there are 3 teams, then ideally the win rate should be 33.33%. Renegade is the most difficult role, but not doomed.

Practical advice for a renegade:
Choose defensive characters so that the outlaws are not tempted to attack you.
If there are 6 players at the table, then the outlaw must die. If there are 5 players at the table, then the vice must die. That is, you need to stay in 1v1v1.

It is unfortunate that these stats are not made available for the site. It would be very interesting to see. If you are winning at that rate you are performing at that role well above average. Still this means a player like you playing at such a high rate has their chances of winning significantly reduced before the game even starts based on your role. That isn't even including other factors like characters and seating arrangement. I would guess that on this site in 6p games the outlaws are winning around 60% and the renegades definitely under 10%.

There are a couple other factors that changes your experience from op. They are commenting from a 5p viewpoint and non arena. One can assume that the players are slightly better in arena which would give the renegade a little more hope.

Another reason why the renegade sucks. Several times I have been renegade and played extraordinarily well. Only to get to a 1v1v1 situation and have a player kingmake.

If you end up vs vice and sheriff, the sheriff can often easily figure out who the vice is, not that it usually matters, the game's over anyways with 2 players for you to kill without allies. If you are the first player to die as the renegade, someone messed up, the renegade should almost never die first. The renegade is the balancing character in the game, preventing any side from being able to dominate on their own, as no team starts with a full 1 character advantage over the field. In theory, a team shouldn't be able to win without the renegade's help, though as a game with quite a bit of chance that's no guarantee. The renegade is the weakest character/side, and so is the lowest priority for everyone, who should also want the renegade on their side. That said, poor players or insane hands can throw everything off. Players should be avoiding antagonizing the renegade, who can turn the tides against them as the neutral resource.

BGA doesn't provide these statistics, so I collected them manually. I'm going to write a post about it here later.

Players are actually better on average in arena, so I encourage playing in arena for the best gaming experience. Including the last season, I didn’t encounter kingmaking.

Renegade is the hardest role, and also other players are never happy about the way the rene plays. Outlaws think he behaves too much like a deputy whenever he shoots them (although he needs them to die and not succeed at killing the sherif), deputies and sherif think he's behaving like an outlaw whenever he targets them (although he needs to get rid of the deputy early enough, and leave the sherif quite weak for the final showdown). So every one has an opinion and complains, even when themselves always lose with the rene, forgetting that it's a solitary role... My advice: when you're not the rene, just keep your mouth shut and let the rene play as he sees fit, it's difficult enough as it is...

I've won a couple of times with Renegade, a large part of both victories was some lucky draws. It's the most challenging role to play but also the most interesting. It feels like the least responsibility since you're not on a team.

A rookie mistake I have: Sheriff, Outlaw, Deputy and me (Renegade) left. I support killing the Outlaw, putting myself in an awful position. Renegade + Outlaw + Sheriff is a much better situation then Renegade + Deputy + Sheriff. The Outlaw and Sheriff focus on each other which makes it easier for Renegade to control the balance. In the other situation Renegade + Deputy shoot each other. Even if Renegade kills Deputy, he's not likely to stand a chance at the Sheriff.
