Explanations of more bespoke Game Preferences?

Post by T_saur »

Does BGA provide an explanation anywhere for what all the game preferences do? I know the basic ones are universal (player count, game speed, etc.), but sometimes when I'm trying new games, I encounter preferences for that game that I'm not familiar with at all. Then I also can't find them in the rulebook for an easy explanation, sometimes because some preferences are born of community meta rather than the game design rules.

I know Terra Mystica is one such game that has a bunch of preferences, but it also has a "BGA Settings Guide" provided under the Game Rules section.

Like I said, I've encountered it here and there on different games, but none are springing to mind right now, and I've never found a comprehensive reference for them unless there was one specifically made for it like Terra Mystica. I never want to have to go digging around the forums or the internet to try to understand what some of the preferences might mean, or exactly how they're implemented in that game.

Am I missing something, or is this a feature that BGA should investigate implementing?

Some of them are explained when you select the different options (underneath the selection box). The only difficulty with that is if you're setting up a game, you want to do that before inviting any players, because once anyone joins the table, you can't change options anymore. I'm not sure what happens if you're intending for whoever wants to to join - in the old lobby, you had to open the table to other players before they could join, which gave you some time to play with settings (so you can avoid people joining before you'd chosen everything by starting a game that way instead of from the game page).

As to ones that aren't, many are explained in the forums, and you can get to the forums from the game page easily enough by just scrolling down - often the topic explaining the option I want to know about is right there to be clicked on (assuming someone has answered the question, which isn't always the case, but often).
