As I understand it, yes. We still play trying to win. There may be no trophy (what exactly is the worth of Arena or tournament trophies?), but we still try to win every game. There's also elo, which is just a skill estimate, but some (many?) people take it as goal and something to "fight" for.Hagardunor wrote: ↑02 June 2024, 18:33 except in the arena or tournaments, is BGA a competition platform ?
Did you meet unfair players ? I did 2 times in a row, and it drove me nuts

You keep mentioning about 'fair use' of the expel button, but you refuse to answer the simple question. Under your so called 'fair use' rules, how many minutes should someone wait before expelling for it to be a 'fair use' of that button? First give a definite answer to that question before trying to make other random 'rules' for the way games are played.
Re: Did you meet unfair players ? I did 2 times in a row, and it drove me nuts
The warning is the turn timer getting close to 0:00.Hagardunor wrote: ↑02 June 2024, 18:29 What I would have appreciated would have been some kind of preliminary warning
If you don't want players to be able to eject you from the game you can prevent it 100% of the time: Don't go below 0:00. If you had played on medium speed this would not have been an issue.
Re: Did you meet unfair players ? I did 2 times in a row, and it drove me nuts
This is completely different - friendly robber is a clearly defined variant. BGA can implement this by saying, if a player doesn't have 3 houses, another player can't rob them. You seem to want some arbitrary extra time limit beyond 0 - 30 seconds? 5 minutes? 20% of the time limit? You don't have a clear definition of what you're requesting. And even if you did, how is that different than allowing an additional however long to each turn (aka, playing with longer turn times)? When the timer reaches zero, then people can boot you. Simple. You don't want people to be able to boot you, don't exceed your time. If you do, you run the risk of whatever your opponents want to do with that.Hagardunor wrote: ↑02 June 2024, 17:55 What i call for is not completely crazy : there has been a recent update in CATAN settings to resolve exactly the same kind of rules intepretation differences.
Until recently, there was an unwritten law called "friendly robber" that says not to use the robber to someone until he owns at least 3 houses. Some players followed this unwritten rule whereas other did not. Those who use it where evidently disadvantaged.
Now you can have a setting "friendly robber" which is optional and guarantee that all players use the same rules.
What I ask for about time limit management follows exactly the same philosophy
No, actually it doesn't. My personal opinion on booting players (as I have stated earlier in the thread) is that I am quite lenient with booting people. Providing they don't disappear for days at a time (I mostly play in turn-based mode), I let them finish out the game. My personal opinion is based on a desire to PLAY games, not necessarily to win them (though, sure, winning is nice too).Hagardunor wrote: ↑02 June 2024, 18:11 Did you ever play with someone who has connection problems ? It happens very often as far as I am concerned.
Do you take advantage of someone having connection problems, especially when you are not in the arena?
I don't. I let the clock run enough time to make sure that the problem has very little chance to be solved in a reasonable delay (I have waited a few minutes once), and many many players I played with do the same. I have an extraordinary example of it.
What your statement means is that you consider being entitled to.
That said, I understand the contract I enter into. I don't especially like it when people boot me for being over time, but it's how it is. If I ever get booted, it tends to happen in tournament play, where play time is harder to manage. In normal and Arena play, I rarely run over time. And if I do, I accept that my opponents may boot me. I don't like it, I probably wouldn't do it were the situation reversed, but that is the contract we have entered into.
You can think it's unfair all you want. I don't especially like it either, but people are entitled to do it.
There is no misunderstanding. You understand the contract, you just don't like when someone exercises their options under it. The contract is, if you exceed your time, people can boot you. You seem to understand that is what can happen, you just don't like it when it happens to you.Hagardunor wrote: ↑02 June 2024, 18:11 That's why I say that the contract is not clear presently. And that's why I think the rule should stayed the same, but just change the implementation to prevent any misunderstanding between players about the way they use it
How on earth would this be enforced? What is "fairly"? People agree to only use the booting for "good reason" and now mods have to make a judgement on what's a good reason for booting? This would just make more threads with players (like you) complaining that people had agreed to use the time limits and booting "fairly" but it didn't meet THEIR definition of fair. And if "fair" equates to some additional amount of grace time before someone boots you, then (as I said above) choose time limits that include that grace period you want people to afford you.Hagardunor wrote: ↑02 June 2024, 17:29 The only addition to an AUTOMATIC boot I would suggest is an optional switch off of the automatic boot for players who ALL agree to play fairly (in the sense that they would use it for good reasons, in any case not for winning the game)

fair is one second to 1 hour.buu441 wrote: ↑03 June 2024, 01:00 You keep mentioning about 'fair use' of the expel button, but you refuse to answer the simple question. Just notice opponent before pressing the nuclear button is starting to be fair.

Okay sounds like a very solid and well thought out idea. Next step would be to file a suggestions report in the bugs section of the forum (https://boardgamearena.com/bugs). Since it is one of the most groundbreaking ideas we've seen in a long time, surely it will gather enough upvotes and the BGA staff will implement it. Please let us know once you have made the post and we will definitely upvote it.Hagardunor wrote: ↑03 June 2024, 20:20fair is one second to 1 hour.buu441 wrote: ↑03 June 2024, 01:00 You keep mentioning about 'fair use' of the expel button, but you refuse to answer the simple question. Re: Did you meet unfair players ? I did 2 times in a row, and it drove me nuts
Pressing the nuclear button is already a notice, it gives 20 seconds to react (in real-time). I sometimes wait 10-20 second, press the button, wait the compulsory 20 seconds, then wait some 10-20 seconds more.
Re: Did you meet unfair players ? I did 2 times in a row, and it drove me nuts
That's clearly unfair, you need to wait 1 hour for it to be fair use of the nuclear bomb.
Re: Did you meet unfair players ? I did 2 times in a row, and it drove me nuts
You're at a table with a +9 second turn time, a time bank maximum of less than 1 minute and 30 seconds, and a total expected game time of 12 minutes.
And you expect players to wait an hour before booting you? That is absurd.
Weren't you the one saying you don't want to play on "friendly mode" because you want to make sure your opponents are playing at a decent pace? I don't believe for a second that if another player was not taking their turn you would wait an hour before ejecting them.
If you want that much lenience the play "Fast Turn-based (24 moves a day)".
Re: Did you meet unfair players ? I did 2 times in a row, and it drove me nuts
Not to mention his other major complaint being people who have 100+ games going, because they can't possibly be expected to be prompt with their turns. And now he wants an hour?Cile wrote: ↑04 June 2024, 01:41You're at a table with a +9 second turn time, a time bank maximum of less than 1 minute and 30 seconds, and a total expected game time of 12 minutes.
