Arena points seem screwy

Post by detlefchef11 »

Within the last 5 games, I've beaten someone in Wingspan who was bronze 1 and got 9 arena points and someone who is in elite and gotten 11. I'm in elite around rank 200 or so.

So, yes, the elite player was much lower than I am in elite, but it seems like 1 of those numbers is off. Either I should get less for beating someone at the very bottom of the strata, or more for beating another player in elite league even if they're much lower than I am in that league.

Do you mean Arena position (league and points) or Arena specific Elo? Arena calculates two different measures of performance independently.

Arena points. As I understand them, they're based on 20 if both players are about even in arena standing and, ofc that number is reduced if you beat someone lower than you and increased if you beat someone higher. I get that. I also sort of get earning more points off someone who is high gold than you do from someone who is elite but has lost a bunch since they made it there so they have a very low elite score. Well, that still seems a little strange, but whatever.

What doesn't make sense is earning nearly as much from someone who is at the bottom of the lowest league than you do from someone who is three leagues above them.

As mentioned, there are two scores in Arena: the league and shields, and the AES, which is hidden until you reach Elite.

Everyone starts the season with 1500 AES and (unless promoted from previous seasons) at the bottom of bronze league. As people play games during the season, they may win or lose AES, and they'll probably climb (never move down) to higher leagues. Good players will reach elite soon and have their AES above 1500 easily. Mediocre players may still reach higher leagues, even Elite, if lucky, but they'll probably not have a very high AES. New players, even if very good, will still start at bronze and with 1500 AES.

So, earning similar AES by winning against a bronze and elite players only means that they had similar AES (or similar difference with you) when you played against them. And this is nothing surprising.

Interesting. At least in Wingspan, which is the game I play far more than any other here, I could swear that I'm always at 1500 when I get to elite. Ofc, I could be wrong, but that's what I recall. And, with the exception of my first season, I've skipped bronze and typically got to elite reasonably quickly, losing maybe 1 or 2 getting there.

But, what you're saying is that, if someone rises up to elite without losing much or at all, they'll have something better than 1500 when they get to elite?

Also, given that this number is hidden until you get toe elite and, while you're still in bronze, silver, and gold you earn or lose 1-4 spots there, how is that determined? what is the conversion rate between your core number and the number of spots you move up in the lower leagues?

There's no conversion rate or direct relation between shields and EAS (not AES), as far as I know.

Before you reach elite, you win or lose a number of shields that's only determined by the difference in league levels between the opponents. And this number of shields is an integer and no decimals are "stored", so 0 means 0.

Be wary of your misunderstanding conditioning false recall. The important thing to remember is the two scores are completely unrelated, so a players standing in the league is never a guide to their Elo for that season. The FAQ Jellby linked to explains this clearly.
